Server Version#:1.41.0.8992-8463ad060
Player Version#: 4.138.0
I’ve been using Plex for 2 years without any issues however after updating to the current version, it refused to start at all; after 3 days of playing, I therefore deleted the Plex Media Server folder and reinstalled it.
Some videos will stream - they can be H264 or MPEG4, or even MP4 - but the vast majority leaves me with the 33RPM spinning disk. I’ve not been able to identify one characteristic of the video which stops it from streaming.
I’ve deleted the codec folder - didn’t help. I’ve tried playing with transcoding settings but this doesn’t help. The videos are playable - for example, if I use AiVideos, all of them will stream to my phone but the issue is, especially with TV series, it’s relatively clunky hence I appreciate Plex.
I’ve installed old versions of the Plex Media Server App, then updated them but nothing has helped. What codec(s) am I missing to allow the videos to be streamed?

Ive had exactly the same thing happen yesterday, A handful of small video files are playing but nothing else will. In the dashboard the playback timer is counting up but through a browser, the app in a Samsung tv and App on the IPad the screen just stays black, orange circle spins and the timer stays at zero. Have tied a full rest of the NAS, installed the App store version and manually uploaded the latest version again and its still the same. Im running Plex server on an AS502T NAS
One thing I did discover - I was using Safari for the browser, have opened Chrome - suddenly some of those which wouldn’t run, suddenly work… but not all…
Is it possible playing stuff that can direct play but not if transcodes are required. I ask because I have a Flashstor NAS and I can direct play anything from my Plex server. The second I try and transcode though, it falls apart. I get the symptoms you describe.
I’ve notice my CPU usage increases, my drives are being used but there’s no associated network traffic. I can see files appearing in my transcode folder but nothing will play.
No, when looking at the Dashboard, I can see some files play with direct play and others show direct play but then all I get is the orange circle rotating…
Tried that, didn’t help. what I might look at doing is if someone here has a working version of Plex on an Asustor server, they could send me a copy of their drivers / codecs folders, then I could add them to my structure and then see if that helps…
I can’t get any of my files to play in the web app but that’s because it ends up trying to transcode the audio track. I can play in clients ok as they tend to direct play. The minute I try and transcode though it fails. Anyway… Sounds like it might be a different issue so should probably keep it off this thread
I’ve actually installed Emby - everything works, all my movies can be streamed, this tells me that the issue is definitely with Plex and not with my videos or my server.
Yeah. Jellyfin is working flawlessly for me. I’ve just decided to go the route of running a media server and had been set on Plex but I can’t get it working. I’ve tried the app central download and I’ve tried running through portainer. On the other hand Jellyfin worked without any difficulty and is transcoding free of charge as well.
I too have the same problem. Before the latest update it worked fine.
Now it doesn’t work even after reinstalling an old version.
I also opened a topic on the Asustor forum.
I hope plex fixes it with a patch. I pay for the plex pass!

If Plex won’t respond, then just do what I’ve done - install Emby, works perfectly for me. I’m fed up of the constant patches, waiting to see what they will mess up this time.
Perhaps I should have just left it when working rather than believing updates = good.
I’d also recommend Jellyfin. It’s been working flawlessly for me since I’ve installed. I’ve posted elsewhere on this board and included logs but nobody has bothered to look at them. I’m kind of glad it happened when I did as I was geared up to purchase Plex pass when the discount was on. This is essentially my first impression of Plex and it’s not great!
I can stream ALL of my movies / series to the Plex App on the mobile phone (iPhone 14 Pro) without issue. I can stream very few of the films and none of the series to my MacBook Pro (M1) when using Safari and maybe 10% more of the films (and none of the series) when using Chrome.
This seems to be telling me it’s nothing really to do with the Media Server itself but to do with how Plex works in a Browser environment…
Guys, having had the same issue there, was an update to AMD software on the ASUSTOR NAS today and for me it has completely fixed the issue!!! Everything is now playing fine again so worth trying!!
