After the latest iOs, ipadOs update, subtitles not working correctly

Server Version#: latest
Player Version#: latest

Since the last update, the subtitles on iPad and iPhone are completely unreadable. They are not in the middle, a square appears in place of the Hungarian accented letters (Á,á,é,É, ó,Ó, etc.). It is simply shocking that such a crappy update can appear.

It is the same with swedish subs and is very annoying

Which Server?
Which player Version?

I’ve reported the same issue for Romanian diacritics. It’s indeed related to the latest update.

The previous version still works fine.

Server Version#: 1.42.2.10156
Player Version#: 2026.0.0 (1515)

Platform Version#: 26.2

I’m using SRT files encoded in UTF-8 without BOM. ( I’ve added one subtitle for context).

A few Romanian diacritics (â Â î Î) are showing as squares when playing in the iOS app, although the other diacritics are displayed fine. (as seen in the screenshot, only â is displayed as square)
I also tried encoding in UTF-8 with BOM however the issue persists.
It’s worth mentioning that I did not encounter this issue in the past, so it must have been from a recent update.

Also, I just checked my iPad which still runs the previous app version 2025.31.1 (1461) and this issue does not reproduce and everything is displayed fine.

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King (2003).ro.srt (128.3 KB)

merged these two topics.. Thanks for image and sample subtitle file @cosmin_sulita

Got the new updates about 8h ago
client: 2026.0.1
Server: 1.43.0.10467
and it didn’t help with swedish subs (even if it said to be adressing the problem)

The Simpsons S37E10 Guess Whos Coming To Skinner 1080p Web Dl Hevc X265-NGP.sv.srt (33.0 KB)

Thank you for sample srt file

the 2026.0.1 also show rectangular for Chinese.

Poison.Ivy.II.1996.Unrated.1080p.BluRay.H264.AC3.Will1869.srt-zh-CN-dual-double.srt (126.5 KB)

after the yesterday update (01/27) the problem is the same. On iPad, every subtitle are no in the center and the lower part is slid down, there are subtitles that are correct but there are some that still have the wrong accented letters. These are completely visible on TV. why do you publish work that you don’t check?

Just chipping in to say I am also having this trouble since latest app update. Same issue with question mark characters instead of “åäö” characters in Swedish subtitles on both iPad and iPhone.

No news on a solution?

Hello,

Same issue here on my iPhone up to date as well as my plex server .

Can you please help us ?

Thanks

Fabien

An update came to the Plex app for iPad today. Hungarian accented letters are now displayed properly, if the subtitles are displayed at all. There are some where the subtitles are not in the middle and the bottom hangs down. There are some where they don’t even appear. For other movies, all srt files appear. The app still doesn’t have a Hungarian localization. The live tv is still not good if the tuner is vbox gateway. Neither the channel logos nor the broadcast work, only the program guide comes in.

I am now having playback speed issues suince latest iOS update. When selecting a speed i.e. 1.5 the video slows down as if it is playing at the slowest speed possible and clicking back to ‘normal’ speed does not fix. Have to force close app and stat again only able to watch at normal speed, be it streaming or download.

Hello,

After the upgrade of my iPhone today, still the same with french subtitles .. :frowning:

It doesn’t work

Fabien

Try delete the app, then reinstall. This solved the subtitle problem for me.

Thanks @NTLX it dis worked for the accents !

However I still have a regression .

before this problem the subtitles were adjusted automatically to the screen whatever the format was ( letterbox , full screen , stretched …)

As of this version it’s only displaying in letterbox :frowning:

In full screen or stretched the subtitles appears below the screen so not visible :frowning:

Do you have the same problem ?

Thanks

fabien

This was my problem too, but I completely deleted the app and reinstalled it, and then it was fine.

Lucky you @NTLX .

I have tried several times on my iPhone to delete/ reinstall and even clear the cache but same issue :frowning:
