Server Version#: 1.13.6.5339
Player Version#: 3.63.1
After the latest update, fontconfig cannot load the Chinese name of some fonts.
It has been working well for the past few years, but several recent updates have broken it.
Because PLEX has very few default fonts, So I uploaded some fonts to this directory.
/var/packages/Plex Media Server/target/Resources/Fonts
When I specify the Chinese name of the font in the ASS file, it cannot be displayed correctly. It can only be displayed correctly if I use the English name of the font in the ASS file.
Windows server does not have this problem, only exists in SYNOLOGY.
Then I found that the font list size is very different. The latest update has made the file smaller. And after I opened the latest version, it really lacks the Chinese name of some fonts.
PS: The number of fonts in the font folder is the same.
If you have the time and can help identify more exactly what’s missing and where, I will be happy to write it up. There was just a huge effort to get fonts updated. It’s very likely, since only a few of us can read Chinese, it was overlooked.
For example, I use this font(华康娃娃体W5,This font is very easy to identify. You can compare) when I specify it in the ASS file as
Style: Default, 华康娃娃体W5,…
It does not display correctly and will be replaced by the default font.
looks like this

When I use its English name
Style: Default, DFWaWaW5-GB,…
Then everything is ok.
I have uploaded the font here, you can download it and try it.
DFWaWaW5-GB.zip (1.5 MB)
I think this may be related to your latest update.
“(Transcoder) Chinese and Korean subtitles could render using Japanese character variants (#8713)”
I can copy a Chinese text for you. You can use this to test “希望·欲望·烦恼 系上丝带一绑”. It is exactly the same as the subtitles shown above.
By the way, this font can also be displayed in English so that you can easily test it.

Would you mind going to one of the files, perhaps the example file you show here, and obtaining the XML ? (Hover over it -> Ellipsis -> Get info - View XML)
This tells us what PMS read from the file.
Also, do you have the Local Media Assets agent enabled?
I’m wondering if the incorrect selection is due to “default language” tagging in file files, the naming of the sidecar subtitles file, or whether PMS just ‘got it wrong’.
The information you provide will help take it further. I will then ask Engineering (the transcoder team) to take a look and see what happens.
Also, can you carve off a few MB (about 20) of the file and attach it in a ZIP here as well as the ASS file itself? It will let them recreate what you see. That’s the easiest way to get to the root of the problem.
this is an .ass subtitle, so in my settings, it will burn in.
I uploaded 2 ASS subtitle files here, their content is exactly the same, the difference is in this style, one use the Chinese name of the font, one use English name.
You can apply these 2 subtitle files to any video file.
“华康娃娃体W5”=“DFWaWaW5-GB”
ASS font.zip (1.5 MB)

Thank you.
I’ve written this up and specifically referenced everything you’ve provided here (my sincere thanks to you).
Engineering will next triage and take action.
Thank you very much, it is different from the slow response of the player department (there are a few bugs I found a few months ago, and many people have the same problem, so far have not been fixed), your response is really too fast.
I found the same problem with fontconfig on the linux forum, but they have fixed it. You can refer to this page.
THanks for the link. With that here, they will be able to see what you found.
Monday (tomorrow) is US holiday. There are other tasks ahead of fixing this so I do not know what priority will ultimately be assigned.
They will review what I’ve submitted sometime this coming week (likely Wednesday).
I look forward to hearing good news from you soon
