After Windows 10 1909 update the plex player just crashes

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058
Player Version#: 1.4.1.940

I already uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled but still the same issue, I click the Plex icon to start, it becomes active in the taskbar but immediately disappears again. It looks like that as soon as I play something (even in the small preview panel) it crashes …

I have same issue. Ran update to 1.4.1.940. App just hangs when opening. I uninstalled. Rebooted. Reinstalled. Same behavior.

at least I am not alone … and a pity to hear nothing from the support.

C:\Users\AppsData\Local\Plex folder delete and run the program

same ■■■■ and I already did that before when I uninstalled it. As soon as I play something it crashes.

same problem still exist.

it is a pity that their is NO Support from Plex at all.

Ditto. Player won’t launch. Appears in Windows taskbar but the thumbnail just shows a blank window. Click to enlarge and nothing happens. I can play Plex through Web app but not the new official Windows 10 desktop player.

I have the same exact problem… I have almost 1000 movies, which are now all locked up because the PMS will launch and then shut back down. This took place for me right after a PMS update. Then a W10 update took place and a server reboot. Then once the PC came back up, PMS will not stay running… Please Help. I am a lifetime Plex Pass member.

Hey I found the fix that just worked for me. I went to the downloads page - https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/ and saw that there was a brand new full download as of 12-17-2019 . I downloaded that and ran that install over top of my current install. (I did not remove or delete anything from my current install) Once the install was complete, I launched the PMS server and it stayed running this time.

my PMS is fine, running on an other box. This one is about the Player.

Eek! Looks like I’ll hold of on the Windows update? Are you able to roll back to the previous restore point on Windows?

I wouldn’t roll it back for the sake of the player …

Interesting. I’ve just checked another machine that is running Win 10 1909 and the latest Plex Windows app and I’m not seeing the problem you’re seeing. It may not be a Plex issue. Having said that, I am on different PMS versions to yourself:
PMS versions - 1.18.3.2129 & 1.18.3.2156
Windows Plex Player - 1.4.1.940

my Plex Server Version has updated since … Version 1.18.3.2156 is it now. The Player crashes as soon as I want to play something.

btw: can play fine via Apple TV, iPad, LG TV, iPhone, Web …

Hmm…if it’s working for me, but not for you, it’s likely to be the local device rather than Plex.

Depending on your ‘comfort level’, you might like to try some of the following to isolate the issue:

  1. If you have access to another Win 10 1909 machine, check if the problem moves to the second machine.
  2. Update all drivers and firmware on your Win10 machine and retest.
  3. Run up an instance of Win10 in a VM e.g. using VirtualBox and see if the problem exists.
  4. I’m not sure if you can run the Plex app in Win 10 safe mode? If you can and it works there, then the issue is definitely with your machine. Refer to point 2.

it works at a Lenovo x260 with Win10 (1909 was installed with that version) just okay.

The Desktop DELL OptiPlex is updated with Dell Command Update to the latest patches and drivers.

It sounds suspiciously like a driver somewhere that is not compatible with Win 10 1909 on the Optiplex. Has your graphics driver been updated? I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the issue.
