I am not sure where this request fits in, but I decided to post it under “Feature Suggestions” given that Plex does not support Airplay on Apple TV.
I have read through the other thread that deals with Airplay, and I do not consider it to be “solved”.
As is today, I have no choice but to use the new player, since all my content is using mkv container, and about 75% of it is HEVC. A good chunk of the newer content comes in 4K too.
Prior to the introduction of the new player I was not able to use Plex on AppleTV at all and had switched to Infuse. Congratulations for getting me to reconsider Plex for AppleTV with your great work on the new player by the way!
To my disappointment, I realized that my new pair of Sonos One’s is basically useless with Plex on Apple TV. (The Apple TV setting for Airplay as default audio basically does not work, as Apple TV reverts to HDMI regardless of the setting.) So every time I want to play a movie, I have to leave Plex reset the audio to Airplay and then go back into Plex to watch the movie.
I dont have to tell you that Infuse has gotten it right once more.
So when can we expect to see Airplay 2 support for Plex on AppleTV?
This seems like a bug with the Apple TV and not with Plex. Have you tried troubleshooting that side of things?
This will addressed in tvOS 13, where, from any app, you press and hold the TV button and you can select your AirPlay device. No need to leave the app.
I’ve tested this with my ATV 4th gen and Sonos One and it works fine.
I see that tvOS13 is due any day now. I guess my rant was well timed
Anyway, for what its worth, I don’t think your product managers set the right priorities in term of supporting well the core capabilities of Plex in a changing environment. You would think that Plex would be the platform of choice for mkv/HEVC and Airplay.
Still, I am not happy with the Sonos support, e.g. see the issues with the aforementioned buffer. Is there a way to request such improvements be implemented?
