Hi all! I've been dying to get airplay officially built into the Plex media server, so we can navigate with any client and always get a playback option for any local AppleTV, or other airplay device. This would eliminate the need for a jailbreak, or the need for an official Plex client on an Apple TV.

An app called "Zappo.tv" has this functionality, but it's very limited, and doesn't take advantage of the transcoder.

Please review companion video (video #1) posted here to get full details of what this feature would bring us, the Plex community of users. It would make navigating and playback a breeze, and even easier to access content from anywhere at anytime.

And also, a quick video (video #2) showing how Zappo.TV works as a service, and all you have to do is add your selected device when starting a new session, so all you would do is start Zappo.tv, go to devices, and select your Apple TV. Plex could do the same thing. Start the client, run as a service, that way Plex is always accessible from the task bar, select your preferred client (apple TV, Roku, XBMC, Mac mini, etc.) and your done. After that, you would navigate content, push play, and playback on you're selected device would start. Sounds amazing, right?

Thank you for reading! Hopefully you all see the added value this feature would bring :)

Essentially requesting a remote per client being built in. Right now we already see this locally with PMS and PMC on a network when using Plex on a remote device. Right now i already use this fuction on my device PMS and PMC on the same computer i can use my android as a general remote control of PMC, or i can select a file and tell it to play on the computer as long as Plex is open. Sounds cool, but personally i dont see if playing out. but who knows i may be wrong!

It’s good for people that don’t use the Laika client, and only mobile clients/set-top boxes. Not everyone wants to spend all that money on a new pc when you can grab an Apple TV! I’m requesting this because the functionality is already there, it just needs to be implemented into the Plex software.

Guys, I also just tested software called PlayOn Universal, and it’s essentially a nicer version of that Zappo.TV. It will play back content encoded properly for the AppleTV, but it will not activate the Plex transcoder to do any direct streaming or actual transcoding. So there is still not an application out there yet that can combine all of these elements into one application.

Hi–Great Idea! This request already exists (with lots of +1’s) here: http://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/46297-airplay-support/

Please add a vote here, and if a mod wouldn’t mind combining the two so we know accurately who wants what.

Early 2021 clean-up: implemented (AirPlay, casting/flinging, Plex Companion)
