AirPlay issues with the new audio engine on Apple TV

I don’t think it’s the same issue. As a matter of fact, it’s almost the opposite: Plexamp on iOS only uses AirPlay 1, while Apple Music supports AirPlay 2. On Apple TV it’s the new Plex audio engine with AirPlay 2 that causes the stuttering, while the old engine that only supports AirPlay 1 works fine.
I haven’t used Plexamp to AirPlay to ATV much lately, I’ll try to test it later. Apple did break AirPlay 1 playback on wired connections in tvOS 17.0 (it was later fixed), so this could be a new Apple bug again, they only use AirPlay 2 in their apps and don’t seem to catch these legacy AirPlay 1 playback bugs in testing.

I think I’m having this issue. I posted here last December and included the logs and further testing shows that this is only happening on the Apple TV that uses the paired HomePods. If I turn on the old audio engine on that Apple TV I don’t have audio problems with Plex and I don’t have audio problems on the Apple TV that uses the HDMI connected Sony speakers. Both Apple TVs are on TVOS 17.3 and Plex Player 8.31.

I’ve just tried AirPlaying from Plexamp on iPhone to my Apple TV 4K 1st gen, it seems like I don’t have the same issue (tried both Ethernet and Wi-Fi connection).

Yes, the new audio engine’s AirPlay support has been broken ever since its introduction in June. I hope it gets fixed, along with other issues, when they update their playback engine. In the meantime, switching to the old audio engine and manually adjusting audio delay is a good workaround, as you mentioned in the other thread.

I guess I’ll subscribe to this thread in hope of a fix too.
My setup. Apple TV 4K connected via wired ethernet. Using a pair of OG HomePods for sound. Playback runs for a couple of minutes on the new audio engine but sound just drops out, never to return. Switch to the old audio engine and it works just fine but requires an audio delay of around 200ms.

Thanks for checking with your setup. I haven’t been home for a few days, but I’ll try again to compare Plexamp → Airplay to the Apple TV vs Airport Express. Maybe also some other apps streaming music to the Apple TV such as Tidal and Spotify. At least then maybe I can see if the issue is Airplay 1 vs Airplay 2, or if it really is just limited to some bug in Plexamp.

The whole player needs to change in plex for tvOS and iOS. KSPlayer is the most compatible so we can play without transcoding but the devs stick with
AVkit and MPV which are not great by today’s standards.

…plex doesn’t use VLC, at all. Changing video player is no easy task, and just because something might look promising, doesn’t mean it works out or is able to integrate in a way that works with Plex.
