I have a Samsung TV I bought this year and the TV has Alexa built into it. Recently, I’ve been trying to setup Plex to be able to be controlled through Alexa but I am unable to play videos via Voice commands (E.g Alexa ask plex to play Avatar). When I do that, I asks to connect Alexa to a plex player then tells me it is unable to find a companion player on plex. As a note, I am able to Open plex, pause and play when a video is already playing via Alexa voice commands.
I tried to follow the guide to try enabling “Advertise as player” but I see it on my mobile app but not on Samsung Plex. And when I say “Alexa ask plex to change player”, it says it finds no companion player. According to the guide, Samsung should be a supported player.
Things of note:
- Followed this guide here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/115000320808-getting-started-with-alexa-voice-control/
- Alexa has been setup with the Plex skill and Authorized
- Plex is connected to my server - Confirmed buy saying “Alexa Ask Plex to Change Server”
- My server is enabled with remote access
- Plex is on the foreground when running the Alexa voice commands
- When asking Alexa to play a video on plex, it can tell me the metadata of the video (E.g Avatar at at 1 hour, continue where you left off?)
- Alexa is able to start plex when the TV is on.
- Alexa is able to pause and resume videos already playing
- I have Plex pass
- Server version: 4.87.2
Things I’ve tried:
- Tried allowing Insecure connections based on this article: Important information about Plex for smart TVs after September 30, 2021
- I tried to set the companion player on my phone and I was able to get Alexa to play videos on my phone
- Tried enabling “Advertise as player” on Samsung Plex but is unable to find the option
- Tried restarting the app
- Tried logging off and back into the app
