All 4K content is being transcoded

Server Version#: tested with 1.18.4.2171 and 1.18.8.2468
Player Version#: Fire TV Stick 4K 7.28.0.15501(ba34f115)

Debug Log part and MediaInfo of the File https://pastebin.com/tFQPwNCn

Since I wanted to test the WLAN capabilities of my FireTV Stick 4K I tried to run some test files which went over the 100mbit bitrate limit I had with the Ethernet adapter for the Stick.

Unfortunately, every 4K file was being transcoded. Mid-January I played a 4K file (which is listed above in the Log on Pastebin) which worked in Direct Play and without any issue which was also being transcoded, Literally, any file with 4K is being transcoded to 1080p without me being able to figure out why. I generally use only formats that I can play directly and the file in question was, as I said, not transcoded 1.5 months ago.

Network connection is 100mbit over ethernet but even with 5Ghz it is transcoded, bitrate is at 21mbit so more than enough room even with the slower ethernet connection.

No subtitles are enabled and 5.1 audio is available. Like I said, it played directly not too long ago.

However, the log says that “Direct Play is disabled” while I can’t find any option in the FireTV Stick 4K setting to enable that…

Maybe anyone can point me in the right direction because I don’t know what I check next.

Thank you very much, seems that I have to wait for a new version that fixes this then.

You might be in for a long wait to be honest. 7.27.1 still works for me.

I don’t have that many 4K content and “regular” 1080p HEVC content still is direct play. So I’m in no hurry to get that fixed. But since I have seen posts about rolling back a version on FireTV Stick I might do that at some point.

7.29.1 has fixed this problem for me.

that is good to hear, I have not received the update yet since I’m still on 7.28 but in the next few days this should be updated as well.
