All accounts are having a unique username set

We’re currently going through a process to ensure that all Plex accounts have a “username” set. Specifically for those who had their default username set as their email address, we’re automatically assigning a username to the account. For accounts where this occurred, we’re sending a notification email to let the user know that it happened.

Just to be super clear: Those are legitimate emails, sent from us (Plex). If you received such a notice and you’re fine with the new username chosen for you, you don’t need to do anything else. If you’d like to customize your username, you can do so at any time from your Account page, as normal. (And if you’d completely forgotten you even had a Plex account and you’re not interested in keeping the account, you can delete the account at the bottom of that same Account page.)

Those users who already have a separate username set will not see any changes here. The ones that were created were done so by taking half of the first part of the email address and appending numbers until it’s unique. New usernames (e.g. if you choose to edit an existing one) are restricted to the following rules:

  • Allowed characters: a-z, A-Z, 0-9, _, .
  • Maximum length: 30 characters

If you explicitly log out of forums and back in, your username will update here as well (if you didn’t already have one set).
