Question, what should I do with other video files that are not tv series or movies ? I have lots of extra material. Like cut scenes, weird documentaries, episodes from YouTube channels… extras from dvds blue ray… how do I name them

Just thought I would add to this as I had a problem with one movie, file name was not the issue, It wouldnt even show the file in folder view, I just did as the OP did, I moved it to another library folder and scanned that library, It showed up straight away, moved it back to the original folder, which I had scanned many times to try and fix, scanned it again and it decided to work. Theres only 14 movies in this folder and its not a long name, Iron Man 2008. The only thing I would say is i dont have brackets around the date but this is the same for all of my movies and i only had issue with this one.

It might have worked for now; but it’s still not right. Make it Iron Man (2008); both folder and file and you’ll get a match every time. Otherwise, at some point it’ll break and you’ll be left wondering what happened.

What actually might have happened is that you had a mismatch with your initial file name. Then you changed that to Iron Man 2008 but this didn’t clear the initial mismatch.

For cases like this there is a procedure called the Plex Dance

What fixed it for me was to create a new library and drop all the files in there. Then, wait for Plex to finish scanning. They would all show up now. Finally, move my files to another folder (in windows), then delete the library in Plex and add that folder back to my main library. Wait for it to scann again (or trigger it). They all got picked up this time!

Since this is such a popular thread I figured I would drop in other information that I’ve had to figure out the hard way as to why some films might not show up.

So my server is running in an Ubuntu Server 16.04 VM on a Linux Mint Host. The Plex folder is a 4-Disk RAID Array of the ext4 file system. With that in mind, some problems and fixes I’ve ran into.

  1. Name the file right. Everyone’s said it, it’s a good first step. The convention is something like “Godzilla (2014)” or “Blair Witch (2016)”. Look here if you’re still confused: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200381023-naming-movie-files/

  2. Sometimes the file shows up but remains with weird naming that doesn’t match the file name. Check the Metadata!! It might be that your file also has Metadata attached to it that contradicts the file name. There are probably easy ways to this en masse, but for a single file I prefer to use good old VLC. Just open the file, go to Tools->Media Information (Ctrl+I). Here’s some Metadata. If it doesn’t match the Plex Server naming convention discussed in Step 1, then you should probably change it. Just change it to “Godzilla (2014)” as above. A button will pop up to “Save Metadata”. This has fixed a handful of problems for me.

  3. ** File Permissions!** This is also rarely mentioned but is especially important for servers hosted on macOS, Linux, or UNIX based operating systems. In my case, my main user on the Linux Mint host created the Plex Raid Array. At the bare minimum, you need Read permissions on any folders containing media such as the main “Movie” or “TV Shows” folder so that Plex can search it, and Read and execute permissions for any media FILE.

This problem manifested itself for me because I also have an external hard drive formatted in ExFAT for compatibility between all my local computers. When I backed up some media to it, it destroys all permissions. So I noticed that they just weren’t showing up at all. Running a simple “ls -al” on the folder will reveal the problems. In my case, files from the ExFAT hard drive had these permissions by default “-rw-rw-r–” Notice that neither I, nor groups owners have Execute Permissions. Contrast that to files that are showing up that have the permissions “-rwxr–r--” Running a simple “sudo chmod 0744 .” inside of one of these folders will fix this permission error by giving the owner Read, Write, and Execute permissions and everyone else the ability to Read that file.

I have had the same issue with 2 Star Wars movies. All of the 8 movies were named using the same method but to were missing (Interestingly they appeared in the Star Wars collection…). I slightly changed the names then correct them back (In Windows Explorer). That action forced Plex to analyze and add them to the library.

I have a slightly different problem
The files were there yesterday and visible by Plex
Today plex can not see the files on my NAS drive
When I go to edit and make no changes to the Movie
directories but simply save the changes (no changes made)
Plex begins to add the movie files as if they have just been added
This has happened a couple of times now - there does not appear to be a
problem with the NAS drive or the network as all movies are discoverable by using windows
Just seems that Plex forgets that they are there

Any ideas

My situation is weird. Proper naming schemes don’t seem to matter to plex in some cases. But anyways as a test this is what I did:

All movies shows up. Weird thing is in this set:

Only bad boys the first one is showing up in plex. Also only bad boys 2 is named bad boy 2 2003.mkv while the others are all some weird naming scheme. Any ideas?
