All Movies Missing Past Sept 2021

Server Version#: 4.148.0

MacOS: sequoia 15.5 (24F74)
Storage: Synology DS1517+
Protocol: SMB

Hello. I’ve been running my Plex server for about 15 years and have never seen this before. About two months ago I noticed a large amount of movies missing from my library. I noticed that there are no movies available past September of 2021. Anything that I add to the library that was released prior to that date shows up in Plex, but anything released after that date is nowhere to be seen.

I’ve verified the path to the new movies is accessible and deleted and rebuilt the movie library from scratch. After rebuilding, the entire library showed for about a day then vanished again after that.

I also noticed that there is no Logs file in the app path below. The log file is not being created, even after rebuilding the DB.

‘/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs’

Has anyone seen anything like this or have suggestions to a fix? I’ve got a feeling there’s a corrupt file in my library causing it, but without logs there’s no way to be sure.

If you cannot download the server logs from the web ui, you should be able to find them in this path:

/Users/davidsanoja/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server

Good call… I didn’t know you could pull logs from the UI. Any suggestions where I can look within the logs to determine the issue?

Check and set permissions on the Synology NAS. It is not common, but Synology NAS have been know to mess up access permissions occasionally.

There is an SMB bug in MacOS causing Plex to not find all media files. The missing files are not tied to a certain date, but you might still be affected.

See Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing - #638 by Bat_Mang.

In Plex Media Server Settings → Library, enable Scan My Library Automatically then restart PMS.

At startup, Plex will write to the log files the media directories it scans.

Look in Plex Media Server.log and its rollovers, .1.log to .5.log.

Edit: Here’s some sample log entries. This is from Plex running on a Synology NAS. The log files from a Mac should be similar.

Plex Startup

When Plex Media Server starts, it rolls over the log files (they also rollover when they hit a size limit).

BPQ: [Idle] -> [Starting] at the top of a Plex Media Server.log (or .x.log) file is an easy way to tell when Plex Media Server was started.

Thank you! The link you provided seemed to have corrected the issue after following the remediation steps. I’ll know for sure if the movies remain in the library after a day.
