Server Version#: 1.23.2.4600
Player Version#: Latest Apple TV app
Using a linux machine running Plex Media Server, playback on an Apple TV HD plugged via HDMI into a Denon receiver. When playing back media with surround sound encoding (5.1, 7.1, in AAC, DTS, whatever) Plex transcodes it to stereo. All other players on the Apple TV play back surround sound fine. If there is a setting that I can switch to stop Plex from doing this, I can’t find it. And it used to work just fine - it’s only been in the last couple of months that it stopped.
Proof that it’s transcoding, taken from running ps on the linux host, looking for Plex Transcoder.
Note that your Apple TV is being seen as Remote by your server. Apparently they are on different networks. You can circumvent that by going to Settings > Network > Lan Networks and add your network 192.168.3.0/24 (if that’s the mask) there.
YOU’RE A GENIUS! That’s exactly what it was. Even though I had “unlimited” set as quality for remote streaming. Added my other subnet and now it works great. Thank you.
You could also do it the other way around. If you have a remote user transcoding, tell them to go to their player setting and change the remote quality to Original/Maximum. By default all players transcode down to 720, so it’s a good practice always tell your users to change those settings.
I mean, in this case it’s not “remote”, they’re sitting about 15 feet apart. And I couldn’t find any setting in the Apple TV app that would make it work. The local network setting fixed it, so I’m happy. Thanks again!
