Always Original Quality for LOCAL

Server Version#: 1.25.1.5286-6000
Player Version#: AppleTV

I’ve been using Plex since it was an early Beta and it’s worked amazing. However, over the past year, I’ve been running into more and more issues with media not playing right (despite having watched the same media for years!).

Turns out, Plex thinks I should transcode everything locally. I only have one device watching locally, ever, I live alone. So forcing it to transcode everytime results in lower quality streams or stalling when my Synology is doing other things.

I manually change EVERY show/movie I watch from “Convert Automatically” to “Play Original Quality” after it starts otherwise it craps out within the first two minutes.

There doesn’t seem to be any settings to ALWAYS play Original Quality locally (I still need transcode for internet streaming though). I’ve spent way too much time trying to figure out how to change this.

How do I change this?

If it is using “Convert Automatically” you have the option enabled for “Auto Adjust Quality”. Turn that off and it will use the quality you’ve set. For Home Streaming you want it set to Maximum.

THANK YOU! I had been trying everything in the server settings for this. This is going to save me so much frustration!

Glad I could help. The “Auto Adjust Quality” feature only works when the video is transcoded so having that enabled basically forces a transcode.

So this weekend I started having issues with things just stopping to buffer again. I check, and it’s converting my videos again. Thought maybe it reset, but when I go into the settings, it’s still set as OFF for adjusting quality.

Really confused now as it was all working great. I haven’t updated anything or changed settings with Plex at all since I changed this setting.

Any ideas?

There are still other reasons it may transcode. I’ll need to see logs from the app and server to see why.
