Always plays remote content at 2Mbps and 404 vertical resolution

No matter what I do, the player ALWAYS plays content transcoded to 720x404 and 2Mbps when viewed remotely. Claims direct play unavailable (though why not allow higher bitrates and resolutions?). On the LAN there are no problems but remote terrible,

It didn’t used to be like this - worked fine at higher resolutions. How can I fix this?

A good place to start is going through the Troubleshooting Remote Access support article. Something changed that is preventing your remote clients from connecting directly to your server, causing the stream to be routed through Plex’s bandwidth-limited Relay service. Do you know of any network-related changes that may have happened around the time remote access stopped working (ISP changes, different router, port forward settings)?

I read the article and there is no issue, as far as I can see. Like I said, it used to work.

I don’t seem to be able to force the connection speed. If I could do that at least I’d have manual control

I don’t seem to be able to force the connection speed.

When you look at the expanded Now Playing section of the dashboard, do remote streams say that the stream is “Indirect”? If so, you can’t adjust the speed, because the stream is being routed through Plex’s servers, which has hardcoded bandwidth limits. If you disable Relay (Settings > Network > Enable Relay) are you still able to connect to your server remotely?
