An error occurred while attempting to play this video check the connection and try again

I’ve tried to find a solution here after browsing through several threads, but haven’t seen anything:

Plex No Longer Working on Amazon Fire TV STick
An error occurred while attempting to play this video check the connection and try again
Error Occurred While Attempting to play this video. Please Check your connection and try again

My issue is similar, in that I get the “an error occurred” message trying to play videos remotely from a friend’s server (so unfortunately I don’t have the ability to share logs or make changes server-side) on my Amazon Fire Stick (2016 Basic edition). That said, this has only recently become an issue for me, and only specific to my Fire stick; Plex works on my iPhone (desktop site/Safari), Samsung TV app, and on Firefox or Chrome on various PCs.

My friend’s PSM is version 1.24.1.4931. Here’s a log of what’s happening on my Fire Stick:
plexLog.txt (613.7 KB)

Any updates or advice here?

Mine is still not connecting to outside network. Trying to troubleshoot now. My router isn’t picking up the upnp either.

I have that issue too but that’s with two different plex servers. One is on Netgear Router and one is on PC. I think it has to be something associated with Plex Server software in general and not specific to the Netgear Router or the Amazon Fire Stick.

ADDENDUM: I set my accounts to secure connections and both are working. I am able to access my Netgear Plex from remote locations.

Your friend is using a custom domain. He needs to publish that domain to Plex so that the security certificate issued by Plex will work.

I downgraded to free plex it didnt make sense paying for plex pass yet the issue hasnt. Been resolved its coming to 4months…

But how does that explain why I only have issues on my Fire Stick? I can watch it on any other device…

Also, it seemed to work right after I posted this originally. For no reason at all - it just started working all of a sudden. Now it’s stopped again. Same error message as before. I don’t get it.

This issue popped up for me today only on my Android TV plex client. The client and server are both updated to latest version. The log shows that ffmpeg fails to verify peer certificate:

09-15 00:52:30.855 i: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0xc7aa48e0] Peer certificate failed verification

The bug seems to be in the client. The server is set to enforce SSL “preferred”. The client is set to "allow insecure connections on same network " or “allow insecure connections always”. It ignores this setting. This is the bug. The ffmpeg stream first attempts an https:// connection which fails. It should then try again with http://. It never tries this and instead errors out. Other devices on the network do try again and succeed. This is why it only impacts some clients.

The android TV setting “allow insecure connections” seems to be ignored and is only defaulting to “TRUE”.

I just found these 4 tutorial videos and it sorted out the problem.

I’m running an older version of PMS but try the following:

  1. In Plex PMS settings make sure Remote Access is Enabled

  2. In Plex PMS settings (under Network) set Secure Connections = Disabled

  3. On your client (firestick or whatever) settings > Advanced menu make sure Allow Insecure Connection = Always.

I just started having this issue 2 days ago out of nowhere but once I updated these settings to the above today it started working again.

Same here. The latest Android TV client completely broke playback for me. Can’t play any content. My current workaround is to use the regular Android client on my tablet and cast to the TV. The issue is clearly with the most recent Android TV client.

This is now the 3rd time in 12 months that an update broke the most basic playback functionality. Plex, please do more QA before pushing an update to production!

See if this is applicable to your situation:

Having the same issue since i upgraded to the latest player a month or so ago. Not using a WD cloud device. Playing live TV and after about 20 minutes or so (very random), the error message pops up. Running a 3rd Gen firestick where this error happened last but it also has happened on my 4K firestick in the other room. Any solutions in work for this? Log attached. I am having the same issue. Started around a week back. I am running the plex server on the WD mycloud home. Worked like a charm before the issue. Now, it only works on the web browser and iPhone. Does not work on fireTv and android TV devices. See an issue with enabling the remote access too. Someone please help !!

Same problem here. I think it is a problem of the Android application, because Plex for iPad works perfectly, and with the same Plex server. I’ve come to realize that it doesn’t happen in all movies; and where it fails, if you move quickly through the timeline, it usually works. I think the application closes communication with the server at the beginning of the video only.

Been experiencing this issue on Android Clients for a bit over a day now. From what i can tell from logs: there’s a playback issue when video is transcoded as i’m able to direct play select media. No issues on WebClient, Vizio Smartcast, casting or Apple TV.

Troubleshooting steps:

  • tested on apple tv, vizio tv, and pc web player - no issues
  • reinstalled pms and plex apps on affected clients.
  • manually enabled server connection in apps
  • toggled secure connection settings in server+app
  • toggled passthrough on tv and android apps.
  • manually enabled port and tested on remote and local network - no change

Hope this can be resolved soon.

Have the same issue, managed to resolve it on my MiBox by going back to the September version of the Plex application which works so something changed in the newer version breaking things.

Problem now is I can’t stream in my study as that uses the MiStick :\

I’d also started seeing this recently with the only recent changes being the new Bravia apps on the 13th and 14th Oct. All was working fine on my Apple TV 4K, IOS devices and Windows machines. It appeared to only be an issue on my two Sony Bravia XH9505 TVs

Initially, I thought it was just affecting 4K material but soon discovered it was affecting all playback

Tried disabling the security stuff, the requirements of the secure connection on the server and clients…but this made no difference.

Im running the beta PLex Severs but again have always worked fine

So it had gotten to a point where Plex was unusable for me…which is annoying to say the least so I tried lots of different things instead

The final thing I tried was to disable my Pre Rolls…in farieness they were becoming incredibly annoying as I had to watch each one when trying to launch a video only to get the same error message as someone else removed the option altogether and now surprisingly…every single video plays each time…I’ve tried both TVs…with multiple files…both 1080p and 4K and now everything seems to work fine…

No idea why this stopped working as the Pre Rolls has been in place for as long as aI can remember…

I appreciate not everyone will be using pre rolls, but I hope this helps someone out

I can confirm this worked for me too. It’s unfortunate that I can’t use Pre-rolls, but I’ll get over it.

Has there been any true fix to this or response from Plex? This has been an ongoing issue for me for months. The problem is that it’s totally random when I get the error. There’s no rhyme or reason why it happens or doesn’t. I mess with a couple random settings that I’ve read in this thread and restart the app, but then the next time I get the error again.

do you use Pre Rolls…and had you tried disabling at all?
