Really letting me down there Goose
Debating it one thing and i more then welcome this… danjames understood this you on the other had have displayed behavior that’s not something that should be in a forum.
You were arguing for the sake of arguing about hardware you clearly have little knowledge of and one minute saying its last gen and sort of capable of 4k.
Which is it or are we not sure about this.
Oh and just because something isn’t the latest gen doesn’t mean it suddenly became junk since nothing latest for more then a month these days
Hell my shelby cobra certain last gen but its still a sweet ride.
You repeatably and completely ignored the fact that plex has run for 5 years on the android tv boxes without a major hitch and only now has displayed major issues after a major plex update.
The same update that’s refusing to work correctly on some latest gen phone.
On the upside you provided some serious laughs for the rest of the programmers in the office so its not all bad.
Head of the legal department water broke she was laughing so hard (its a boy !! )
Feel free to keep posting i wont stop you
But iam done feel free to say you won or whatever you like as this became pointless long ago and wasn’t the purpose of the post in the first place.
The forum is really here for helping each other reporting bugs and the like none of which you tried doing here.
I really shouldn’t have played along but i couldn’t help myself i knew you were going to go off like that.
Peace out.
@Magnus33 Are you actually seeing the Plex Android TV layout? I tried looking up the device you have and I can’t find anywhere that it says it is an actual Android TV.
Ok guys, just read back in this thread and let me step in.
Since this is the mobile (beta) section, lets keep the discussion to that, so mentioning the Shield or other Android TV devices are pointless. Once I’m done typing this, I’m also going to change the title of this thread to “Generic Android Box Issue”, since it appears this box is not an Android TV box. If it is and Android TV box, then we’re in the wrong room.
Plex does support the mobile app on all Android devices that comply with Google. The problem, is not all Android devices do and the changes they’ve put in can drastically affect if apps work. This is not restricted to Plex. The Plex mobile app uses Exoplayer which is provided by Google. Many manufacturers modify Exoplayer to give it other capabilities, but by doing so may end up breaking something else. Devices certified through Google need to pass some Exoplayer testing requirements. If they pass, then the Plex app should work on them. If they don’t pass, then there could be problems. Plex cannot anticipate all the potential changes vendors put in so the app is designed with Google’s testing requirements for the player.
We can try to look into specific problems but it is easier to look at 1 problem at a time. So please recreate the issue you have then provide the server and app logs for this 1 instance. If you are having issues with multiple files, it may not be the same issue for all of them, which is why working the problem 1 at a time is best.
The plex website is pretty clear that for “Android” it supports mobiles & tablets >4.4
The website is also pretty clear that for “Android TV” it only supports Nvidia Shield, Nexus Player, Razer Forge and Sony Bravia TVs with ATV built in. These are the only certified Android TV boxes available today. Xiaomi has a new one (Mi Box) coming very soon and there will doubtless be more
This is not “false advertising” by any stretch
MovieFan.Plex has also mentioned “certified by Google” which is the key thing here along with a concept called “Compatibility”.
If you want to build Android devices you are free to take the source code and do whatever you want with it, however Google also encourages OEMs to make all Android devices they build “compatible”. This means that they comply with the Compatability Definition Document (CDD) and pass the Compatability Test Suite (CTS). Lots of information on that here: https://source.android.com/compatibility/ - Amongst other things, this ensures that a) the device provides a level of user experience that Google deems acceptable for Android devices and b) provides Developers (like Plex) confidence that their apps will work on all compatible devices, without them needing to specifically test against every single device
Note that if you want to ship Google Apps, including the Play Store, you need a separate license from Google. As part of this, you will also need to sign up to every device you manufacture being a “Compatible Device”.
Both the Tronsmart and Minix devices mentioned in this thread, along with loads of other similar devices sold as “Android TVs” are highly unlikely to be officially licensed OR compatible devices. These OEMs don’t care about user experience, compatibility or licensing Google Apps (and in turn complying with the license terms). All they care about is taking people’s money.
As these devices are not compatible, then it is not Plex’s fault if an App update causes some functionality within the App to cease working properly. While it may well be a change to the App’s code that has caused the issue, if the App is working fine on Compatible devices (but not incompatible ones) then it is really the OEMs responsibility to fix. In some cases (notably with the Amazon devices - that are not compatible) they may be popular enough for a Developer to consider producing a dedicated App or tweaking their App to specifically support that device
