Android (NVidia Shield). "There was not enough free disk space to start the recording"

Server: NVidia Shield
Server Version#: 1.16.3.1402
Storage: 1Tb SSD connected by USB3 - 650Gb free space.
Player Version#: any

I’ve had a problem with recording from my HDHomeRun for the last couple of versions of Plex Server.
All my scheduled recordings get the error “There was not enough free disk space to start the recording”

To try and resolve it I:

  1. Updated everything to latest versions
  2. Rebooted
  3. Deleted and recreated my libraries
  4. Deleted and re-added the Tuner
None of it made any difference.

Testing it last night, I told it record a series that was already part way through a program, then it will record the current airing program then fail to record the next.

Tested with program: FoneJacker.
Part way through the current program then it failed for the next (back-to-back airing).

My libraries
Movies : /storage/522E-A882/NVIDIA_SHIELD/Movies
TV : /storage/522E-A882/NVIDIA_SHIELD/TV
DVR : /storage/522E-A882/NVIDIA_SHIELD/DVR

I record Live TV to the DVR library.

Any help please?
The missus is complaining that her programs aren’t getting recorded and I’ve run out of ideas why it can record current programs and then unable to record future programs when there’s plenty of free space on the connected drive.

Hmm… I think it may be caching the video footage to the local (5.8Gb free. 16Gb total) storage instead of the external drive.

I found this in the PLEX Media Server.log file around the time of the recording:

Is there a way to get PLEX to cache to a different path?
I see tutorials for the Windows server (either define new patch or use Junctions/Symbolic links to move), but nothing for Android.

I think I found it…

Under: Settings (Advanced) | Transcoder there’s an option for “Transcoder temporary directory”

So I created a _transcoder folder in the SSD and copy/paste the path (/storage/522E-A882/NVIDIA_SHIELD/_transcode) in the field for transcoding.

(Note to Plex Devs: This would be easier to have a dropdown navigation to the path same as the “Create Library” path selection)

Now to test, but I have a good feeling about it

Yup, it worked.
That’ll teach me not to RTFM

I wonder how it worked before and not now though?
Still - all good now

So if I have a 2TB external hard drive connected to the shield and I am using that to store my Plex media on, how do I find the path of the drive to enter it into the Plex settings?

In the Plex settings, when you add a library and “Browse for Media Folder” it will let you navigate to your drive.
It’ll be a weird name like /storage/463A-B452/NVIDIA_SHIELD

If you can’t see it then the shield can’t yet see it as an external drive (Shield | Storage)
Once the Shield can see it then the Plex Server will be able to see it.

Thanks. I think I got it. I put my libraries in the Nvidia folder and then found the directory and pasted it into it.
