Android playback

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

I use Plex and have a server network that works well through NAS. But I’m unable to play video content via the server on my android phone also one off the TV’s connected to the server is an android TV which is unable to playback video content via there server. I thought after trying to find answers and if it’s needed to have a Plex pass to play the content on the android phone and TV. But could not find a straight answer so therefore I upgraded for a month in a hope that it would resolve this. But even though I’ve purchased that Plex pass I’m still unable to playback on either android phone or TV. All other smart TVs playback without a problem.

Plex Pass has many benefits but basic playback should not be impacted. The only immediate impact you’ll see with a Plex Pass is that this also unlocks the use of Plex on a mobile platform (those are otherwise restricted to 1 minute of streaming).

As for your issue… would you mind sharing some details about your setup?
e.g. what version of the Plex Media Server app do you have installed and on what platform (I suppose the server is running on your WD NAS)? Also, what version of the Plex for Android app do you have installed on your phone / Android TV?

What kind of media are you trying to play (you can find some of the technical details in the Plex Web app → https://support.plex.tv/articles/201998867-investigate-media-information-and-formats/).

I’m not exactly sure about the nature of the issue you experience.
Is the Plex app on Android failing to play the video at all, do you get some error message or is the playback starting but otherwise impacted (e.g. stuttering…)?

Thank you for responding, I have the up to date version of Plex on each nas phone and TV. I have no issues in playback on smart TVs connected to the network. There is on Android TV that has the latest Plex app. Everything runs and works fine until trying to play video library from the server. It play’s my music from the server and plays all Plex channels. It’s the exact problem my android phone has. The error message is (unable to play media)

“the latest version” is a rather vague information.
There’s e.g. version of WD MyCloud Home that only support ancient versions of Plex Media Server. The actual version will also depend on if you use the public or beta update channels (Settings > [Server Name] > General).

Any input about the other questions?

I will try to give the required info, but currently working at the moment, all I can say that for the phone and TV both apps were downloaded from Google play with a reference number of 9.3.0.
My server’s are western digital Nas they have Plex running version 1.20.4.3517

I think the problem is the Nas server’s I have are not able to transcode files when needed, this is something that is required on playback for Android devices.

If anyone has a suggestion to resolve this or if there are Nas available that can transcode when required
