Android Player issues with Secure Connections Enabled!

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2764
Player Version#:8.0.1.17411

After losing my mind and sleep with the last few PMS and Android Beta updates now singing from the same Hymn Sheet especially when using WiFi both Locally and Remotely on Mobile and Tablets not able to play which seems to be certain video files after upgrade, I did a little digging… It’s not a rebinding issue as first thought as I’ve purchased a new router, so I checked the connections, and disabled secure connections, and to my surprise, but it only works on Tablet here on both WiFi locally and remotely, the files that didn’t play, actually play now!!

Here’s the logs from the Secure connections not allowing files to play…

Plex Media Server Logs_2020-05-07_12-20-43.zip (4.6 MB)

and here are the logs where secure connections are disabled and videos are able to play on my Tablet, but not Smartphone…

It seems that this issue is “Wide Spread” a little like Covid-19, and affecting a large number of Android and PMS users. Can @ChuckPa, @sixones or @sa2000 answer why Secure connections being disabled makes it work on Tablets and possible MiBoxes but not Smartphones via WiFi on Local and Remote connections??

I look forward to an answer and a fix soon!!

Dave

Dramatic analogies aside,

Your modem/router does not allow the private domain plex.direct to exist (DNS rebinding protection is strict).

The first step to resolving is to define an exemption in the modem/router.

On Pfsense, in the “DNS Resolver” service, the solution is

Check your modem/router for similar capability.

Here are my logs while WiFi connected to my ex-wifes router… Secure connection enabled and not allowed files to play here either…

I know for a fact I cannot add anything to this new router either in the DNS section it’s locked out, there must be another way?

Dave

make & model of the device?
Is this an ISP-provided device?

BT Hub 2 if that helps?

Dave

Sorry yes it’s a ISP device… How many others are stuck in this way?

Dave

That’s the problem; quite a few of the Engineering staff are in the UK ; on both Server and Android development teams. If there was a widespread issue, it stands to reason they would have encountered it long ago during initial development given the BT SH 2 is a 2018 device.

Looking on the BT Forums a few have had issues with both the Hub 6 and the Hub 2. Is there a possible solution to this issue or are we stuck in the proverbial :poop:?

Dave

I will reach out to one of the Android developers (also lives in the UK) and see if any ideas pop into his head.

He did make changes for DNS rebinding (i don’t know the details) which is processing through Test/QA now destined for the app store.

No problemo, I’ll keep checking on the forums and see if there is anything I can do to get it through the router in anyway… But I doubt it… It’s been an issue for a couple of updates now, just seems it’s going to be a issue for a while?

Dave

Floating an idea …

If you were to leave secure connections enabled

however

define the local LAN to be exempt from the requirement in Settings - Server - Network - Show Advanced

I’ll go and give that a try will get back to you… Kids first!

Dave

I’m back home, which box do I put the exemption into? There’s a few…

Dave

Hi Chuck,
Well just to give you a heads up, it didn’t work, I’ve even tried the test version of Plex for Android that’s in circulation on one of the threads and that to failed miserably…

Will await any other info on this… I am using Ubuntu 18.04LTS if that’s any help also?

Dave

I need your logs and a screenshot or two which show me what’s happening.

When you’ve defined the LAN segment correctly, it will not require auth.

What is your LAN IP range?
How many subnets are involved ?

Hi Chuck,
1 subnet, IP range from 192.168.1.2 to 253 as the router is 254.
Here’s the logs of the last couple of hours of attempts with the smartphone and Tablet PC local lan complete with Roku etc.

Dave

what is on 192.168.1.99 ?

I feel like a sarcastic comment like Balloons lol!! Sorry, the Plex server is 99, I’ve tried it with and without that in the list too… haven’t I?

Dave

Chuck, I have a feeling you’re going to tell me I’ve set something up wrongly???

Dave

Do you have Secure Connections “REQUIRED” (tyrannical) or “Preferred” (civilized) ?
