Android TV Beta 9.29.0.3217 - Unable to direct play causing no audio

Server Version#: 1.31.2.6810
Player Version#: 9.29.0

This installed yesterday and I am having an issue where certain types of files, particularly AC3 5.1 (although not limited to) are playing without any sound.

For example my DVD rips off both Star Trek VOY or DS9 when I press play I see a Pause symbol and I need to press unpause, then there is no audio.

When I look at the playback info I see a message that says Direct play failed, fallen back to Transcoding.

A reboot of the Nvidia Shield 2019 fixed the issue but then a few hours later the same thing has occurred.

But this time I even got it with a Blu-ray rip that was in DTS HD MA. Same message, weird thing is if I tried to play one of the Star Trek videos again and then tried the Blu-ray one it worked.

Never had this issue prior to this version.

Edit: The Shield is hooked up to a AVR so there should be no need to transcode.

Edit 2: updated the server to 1.32.5.7349, still the same issue.

Edit 3: Just tested my Shield 2017 which is hooked up to a TV that didn’t support AC3 5.1 do audio has to transcode the files are playing back as they should.

Playback info is listed as Transcode, audio is listed as Copy.

So I left the beta and rolled back to the public release 9.28.0.3162. Will check tomorrow if the issue comes back.

I’m getting the same issue. Sound works when transcoding but not direct play on shield tv. Turning off refresh rate switching seems to fix it, so maybe related there? Never had this issue in the past. Will try rolling back off the beta.

That’s reassuring that it’s not just me or my equipment.

Thanks for reporting we have been looking into the problem but haven’t yet been able to reproduce. However from the logs I have seen, the build below should solve the problem.

Arm64: https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/9.30.0.3251-e1d5853/PlexForAndroid-9.30.0.3251-e1d5853-arm64-v8aGooglePlayRelease.apk

If your able to give the build above a go and let us know if it solves the problem. If it doesn’t, please fetch logs from the build (as it includes some extra information).

Steps for fetching the logs are available here; https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/

OK I installed the Arm64 version and have the same issue, I think @Luzifel in his thread mentioned Refresh rate switching, and it does seem if I have either Refresh Rate Switching or Resolution switching the issue occurs. Turn it off and the episode will direct play.

After talking to another user, we appear to of found the problem (as you mentioned) is related to refresh rate switching.

Here’s a new build that adds a delay after switching modes before continuing to load the player.

The last Build 9.30.03261 solves the problem for me.
I would confirm its a problem with the refresh rate, if i disable it i am able to play my files succesfully.

Dont know if its still usefull, but here are my logs from the Build 3251.

Thanks, for checking, that’s a big help!

If you could, could you give this build a go and see if it also solves the problem;

Arm64: https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/9.30.0.3265-eccf7f6/PlexForAndroid-9.30.0.3265-eccf7f6-arm64-v8aGooglePlayRelease.apk

Yes, it seems like this Build (3265) also fixes the problem for me.

Perfect, thanks a lot for confirming! Will get this into the next beta (will be released tomorrow).

Build 3265 seems to fix it for me too, I can enable refresh and resolution switching and it still direct plays.

This is interesting problem is now happening on the 3265 build. Was working fine last night, watched some 1080p each content earlier. Now back to SD VOY and falling to Direct play, transcodes with no audio.

Edit:

This is odd, I now went and switched the refresh rate on again to reproduce the issue and get logs but now seems t be working.

Here the logs should be within 20 minutes of the issue first occurring.

Build 3280 had the correct fix implemented in, the others on this thread solved the issue for some people but not for others - depending on the speed of your TV / AVR / soundbar switching modes.

Still seems to be an issue in 9.30.0.3478
