Android TV Crash Live TV

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2935
Player Version#: 8.3.0.18912

Sony Bravia XBR-55X900F
HDHomeRun CONNECT QUATRO Version 20200521

Here are full logs from “ADB logcat” around the time of the crash, to get the most information. Macgyver is the show that made it crash twice, you can search for that. It does not appear to fully crash as I don’t see an error when I run “adb logcat AndroidRuntime:E *:S”, so I think it’s just stopping the main activity. When the error happens you end back up at the Android TV Home Screen, Plex is no longer open.

If this is not the best way to send full logs and there is a better one, please let me know and I will send it or post it a different way.

I have had a consistent issue with playback on my Android TV with Live TV. Live TV recordings and all my movies play fine. Live TV works 100% with the new player turned off. It will work all day some days and other times crash over and over. It seems to maybe be related to specific OTA signals because when it crashes you can just tune a different channel and it will be fine. If you tune back to the channel that crashed it will crash again and again. If you try that channel again later, it may work fine. The streams seem to not change, it’s always Direct Play, same resolution, same Audio signal.

I have HDMI audio passthrough enabled but I tested and the crash happens if it’s turned off as well.

If you are transcoding it’s fine, so I can watch that channel from Web or Android phone. It also appears to Direct Play fine from a different Fire TV.

No issues on server logs and server has had no issues. It’s on a standard Ubuntu 18.04 install on a stable Unifi network.

I´m very new to Plex and still testing, but I´ve encountered the same problem on my Sony Bravia KD-55X8505C TV…
I don´t have any logs available - just want to say that you´re not alone with that problem.

Well, I got frustrated and bought an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019, set it all up, new cables, fresh install, what should be best supported Android device. I ran it all day, no issues, thought I had it! It just crashed tonight watching Live TV just the same as my Sony :frowning:

So I guess just overall new player instability

Pretty mad for wasting 199 possibly. It does run faster and have a better picture, so at least there is that. Also no stupid sponsor row on Android home screen like Sony

More fun tonight, had a crash tuning a channel on the shield, then no channel would tube after that, killed app, reloaded, tune channel, spinner and locked up… I had to reboot the device to make it work again

Also had some major audio sync issues with passthrough off and on

Awesome… Guessing Android TV just isnt too stable right now overall, at least on new player, maybe I’ll try Fire TV next

There appears to be a general instability and lag with the Live TV / DVR part of Plex client and/or server; which is really unfortunate because its very close to being a great solution for live tv / dvr.

To compare I’ve also installed HDHomeRun app on the same device (2017 Shield) which is lightning fast in every aspect.

I do realise Plex buffers streams from HDHomeRun and this presumably adds to the delays but for those of us lucky enough to have excellent DVB-T signal strength/quality it ruins the usability and could even cause some of the crashes.

Perhaps developers could add a setting to adjust the buffer from 0 seconds to 10 or whatever.

Agree, upsetting for sure, but is what it is and doesn’t seem to be a focus for live TV. The whole reason I bought Plex and moved to it was to finish cutting the cord for guide, live TV, and DVR. They sure do push it as a feature they care about on their website to get subscriptions.

For some random reason appears worse at night than during day, which doesn’t make sense to me unless the signal is changing. Last night no matter the channel I couldn’t watch more than a minute. Went to old player and HDHomerun and all works perfect as usual, so no hardware or network issues, just same old unstable Plex with live TV.

But hey, we can now watch 80 random channels of non sense instead of our OTA major networks with shows we actually want to see, so always that!

Edit:. I shouldn’t make fun of features, just hate that I see a world where Plex moved to be just another online content provider with ad and paid revenue… I get it, only so many tech people out there installing local servers, market wasn’t huge

I can’t fully agree - the new channels feature is not a bad idea but there seem to be a lot of resources wasted on developing new features, instead of squashing bugs which should always be the #1 priority. Please plex management always ensure a smooth, reliable and consistence experience for the existing product first.

Like one of the other forum members, I also moved from Kodi and paid for Plex and HDHomeRun was purely because of Live TV & DVR and even though the remote streaming is excellent with Plex, I do feel ripped off every time Live TV crashes on our SHIELD 2017 and 2019.
