Android TV New Video Player - Issues w/ Items Marked as Watched

Me too. This is annoying. I have to go and mark all the episodes played or it keeps defaulting to episodes I’ve already watched.

I’m experiencing a “mild” version of this issue on a Shield TV 2019 (plex app version 8.4.2.19372) and server version 1.19.5.3112 running on Windows 10. It only happens if playback is started via a voice command to an echo device (i.e. “Alexa ask Plex to play …”). The requested video starts playing, but the server dashboard doesn’t register any activity and the show or movie’s playback status is not updated. If I start playback via the plex app on the shield or via a connected app on an iphone everything is fine.

I also have this issue with Nvidia shield pro 2019. Shield is updated, pms is updated. Episodes does very often not get marked as watched automatically.

Can you still reproduce this on the 8.6.0 beta?

I still see it on the 8.6.0 w/new player + the plexinc/pms-docker:plexpass container.

My behavior is that items are marked as read, but the “TV Shows” display isn’t updated until that page is refreshed. If I navigate “TV Shows”->“Live TV”->“TV Shows” it reflects that the episode was played.

Might be slightly different from what the OP has, which seems related to stopping watching with a minute or so left on the program.

Yeah, it should mark as played when it gets 90% of the way through an item. As for refreshing, it should happen pretty quickly when returning to the page from playing, but could confirm your server version too, please, and list some detailed steps to reproduce? I’ll have a crack and see if I can reproduce then

My PMS version is Version 1.20.1.3232 on Docker (technically with the NVIDIA GPU container runtime, but it happens regardless of HW acceleration or not), reproducible on Android Shield TV running any version of OS and Plex Android TV player from the past year.

Reproduction steps are:

  1. Create a Library of TV Shows in a Season folder (e.g., “My Program/Season 01/Episode.mkv”)
  2. Mark at least one episode as “Unplayed” (either it’s genuinely new, or marked that way via Plex)
  3. Select an episode and watch it via Shield TV (either let it finish and return to the episode list, or press “back” when there’s ~1m remaining)
  4. Note that the TV Show still shows the episode unwatched (e.g., if you had 10 unwatched episodes in Step 2, the badge on the folder will show “10”)
  5. Navigate away from the “TV Shows” library, such as to “Live TV” or a “Movies” library
  6. Navigate back to the “TV Shows” library, and observe the number of unwatched episodes is now decremented (e.g., you now correctly have 9 unwatched episodes)

Our normal process for watching TV is to watch an episode, then “refresh” the library view by navigating away then back, to get an accurate view of programs.

Thanks! I’ll look at that today

I think there is a misunderstanding of what this thread is about.

The issue is that episodes does not get marked as watched automatically. It is not just a cosmetic issue, as the server does actually not consider them watched, hence breaking “on deck” and webhooks functionality.

To reproduce:

Start an episode

Let it go to the next few episodes automatically

Look at each of the episodes you just played. The progress bar will be at the end (well over 90%) but the episode will not be marked as watched.

It doesn’t seem to be a problem with movies, so I wonder if it has something to do with length. The show I’m testing on is around 10 minutes each episode.

What d2freak said.

Is it specific to short videos for you as well, @TeknoJunky? I haven’t personally seen that on longer items

not sure I’ll have to pay more attention next bing session

Has there been any changes regarding this? There has been a few updates to the Android client since you posted, and for me, the issue of the episodes not being marked as watched seems to have vanished. Not sure if this is coincidental somehow or if a fix has been pushed (no mentions of this in the changelogs).

However, there still is a problem with the webhooks it seems. Episodes are indeed marked as watched on the server, but the webhook event is not sent. I’m not sure how this is possible since I would have assumed the server would trigger the webhooks when it notices the episode is watched. However, I have confirmed now with both movies and episodes, only if I watch on AndroidTV (Shield Pro 2019), they will not be sent. If I watch (for example) on the Web Player, the webhooks do work. But on the Shield they will not. But the episodes/movies do get marked properly as watched.

Does this make sense to you?

Edit: Never mind. The webhooks are working as well. Actually, for me at least, everything now seems to work fine.

This is a frustrating problem still happening to me. My Nvidia Shields are still doing this - we just let the autoplay advance to the next episode and they end up unwatched.

You can see in this video that the watched bar is all the way across as I mark them played in the web UI;

I’m having this issue as well. What is going on with Plex’s Android development? Things have been buggy as hell all year.

I’m having a related issue with the new player on Android TV (Shield 2019 Pro). I’m seeing episodes being marked as watched as expected, but sometimes it marks the episode after the one I watched as watched as well - leading to me missing an episode since “on deck” will show the episode after the one I’m supposed to watch.

Absolutely the same issue here, I’ve just had to spend 10 minutes going through a show I’ve watched recently manually marking episodes as watched when the progress bar shows them as watched but each episode still presents itself to the deck as being watched.
This relates to a number of issues I’ve had with the latest version of the app on Android TV:
Watched episodes still presenting to the deck
Watched episodes playing a black screen at the end of the episode often with the counter starting from the beginning
Watched episodes queuing themselves up to be watched again just as you finish watching them
Theme tune from the show you just watched when you browse to a different piece of media
Audio issues: sound becoming tinny and crackling coinciding with the playback of a new episode (happens a few times a week)
Audio playing but video frozen for the first second or two from the beginning of a new episode
Currently running app version 8.8.0.21200 on an NVidia Shield 2017

I have the same issue, this is what I’ve noticed:

Web Player properly marks entire series, movies, individual episodes as watched when using the “mark as watched” option, as well as working when you actually watch it, so totally working in the web player.

Watching a movie or episode in the Android TV Plex app does properly mark it as watched.

Using the “mark as watched” button in the Android TV Plex app does not work at all.

I’m able to use mark as watched but the point I was trying to make was that I shouldn’t have to mark a watched episode as played, it shouldn’t be available to continue watching.

Hello

I’m seeing that this thread is still active after my initial post at the beginning of 2020
I’ve switched to the new Chromecast w/ Google TV and the issue remains

I tested it on my Pixel 5 phone, and the issue remains

So for sure this is an Android App based issue and nothing to do with “where” the android app is running from.

And sure the issue is not the automatic side of it all
Meaning

  • I mark the episode manually => works perfectly
  • I let episodes run automatically (like binging through an entire seaon) => a lot of episodes will not be marked as watched when (of course) i do not skip them and let them run until the very last second

So yes, let’s not get confused here because manually marking an episode always has been working
But we should not have to do that when the function of autoplay is here to do that for us.

Havinng to mark several episodes as watched after having watched that episode, is a serious pain

Godspeed,
Sincerely,

Mawuena
