Android TV: Scan through video preview thumbnails like Roku?

Server Version#: 1.19.3.2852
Player Version#: 8.1.0.17967

On my Roku, the preview thumbnails are shown above the timeline and I can scan through them to get to the desired location. From previous threads, it was suggested that these were also available to the Android TV app but I can’t figure out how to display them if this is true. If I go up to the timeline and skip forward and back it shows one thumbnail over the timeline which is not very useful because the whole screen updates to the current location anyways?

You do it the same. But keep in mind that on the Roku, when accessing the timeline playback pauses, on Android it doesn’t. If you don’t want it to skip, pause playback first then you can browse around the timeline before hitting ok to restart playback.

This is not working on the NVidia Shield for me. Left/right always skips (30s forward/10s back) and multiple preview thumbnails are never shown. Is there a setting I am missing?

The regular left/right does not show the previews. It doesn’t even show the timeline. They only show when using the timeline.

If it’s the same as FireTV - up D-Pad twice will take you directly to the scrub-bar and the Thumbs - left/right D-Pad fore and aft from there.

Right or Left/FF/RW from Play - is the ‘Bump Mode’ and brings up the timer - Thumbs only available at Scrub-Bar level.

Assuming Androids are equal - that’s what I get on FireTV.

That is what I am doing and it isn’t working. I press Pause and Up twice to show and focus the timeline. Left/Right with the timeline showing does the same instant skips as with the timeline hidden (ahead/back of 30/10s) and only shows one preview thumbnail of the current position? See blurry “screenshot”:

Yes, one thumb per 10 seconds I believe. Now you scrub right or left using the thumbs so you can see (about) where you are. Release and you go there immediately. <—that’s a little strange getting used to, but I’ll get used to it.

Same as Roku, but as soon as you press anything on Roku you’re forced into the scrub-bar with the thumbs AND the OSD. It’s kinda annoying if all you want is to bump a little, or simply PAUSE, so you can see the image - not the OSD. <—a lot, if not ALL of that nonsense was brought on by Roku INC. I wish there were a way to make that better, but there may not be.

I like that you can select NOT to open the OSD, but if you need the thumbs to navigate you can get there and do that. <—with 2 up presses.

That’s too bad. Displaying just one thumbnail and instant skipping is nothing like the Roku and not very useful for me. Since the whole video/static image updates instantly when skipping on the Shield anyways, I don’t really understand the point of using the preview images in this way.

I can reproduce. That is a bug. The timeline should wait until you hit ok to skip to the new spot. Let me bring this up with the team.

If ‘the team’ is going to ‘fix it’ by bringing up the OSD every time to you do anything - please remain silent.

Right now it’s the ONLY thing FireTV has going for it.

No, these are 2 different things. The OSD should not come up when using left/right. The issue is using left/right while the timeline is in focus.

Thanks. That makes sense. Is it also supposed to display multiple thumbnails at the same time?

Not sure what you mean by multiple, but it should change with the location along the timeline.

He wants a wall (line) of VPTs above the scrubber - exactly like the Roku.

That’s what I’m afraid of.
Right now, it’s different than Roku - it doesn’t bash me in the face with an OSD I don’t need - until I need it. <—I like that.

Yes, I meant displaying multiple preview thumbs horizontally over the timeline like the Roku app. But you would still have to manually bring up the timeline so it wouldn’t “bash you in the face” unless you wanted it to. In any case, scanning through the single thumbnail would still be useful to me if it didn’t skip until you select the thumbnail with OK (the bug gets fixed).

No, the Android app doesn’t do that. It is suppose to show the thumbnail for the current location of the slider on the timeline.

I think that ‘feature’ is a Roku INC ‘feature’ - like maybe the Roku can’t work any other way and the Android can’t work like the Roku.

Or something like that.

Right, the way Roku shows multiple images is a function of the platform. Other apps would have to recreate this feature. I have no idea how complicated that would be but you can always make a request.

Is this on the list to be fixed soon?
