Android TV version 8.24.0 breaks ASS subtitle and TrueHD transcoding

NVidia Shield TV Pro 2019
Server Version: 1.24.4.5081
App Version: 8.24.0

I got home today and noticed a lot of my videos were not playing, mainly videos that have ASS subtitles and TRUEHD audio. The only change is that the client updated to 8.24.0 in the background. Since the Shield keeps the apps up to date I’m assuming I was on version 8.23.X prior to today. Not sure which version of server I was on prior to this, but I upgraded it to the latest one just to rule that out.

The server is hosted via an archlinux docker container externally and transcoding via Quadro P2000. NVIDIA Driver 470.42.01

Narrowed it down to a these options to get it to work:

  • Disable Audio Passthrough

  • Change subtitle burn-in to image formats only

The same videos were working prior to this update.

We’d need the Android logs, rather than the server logs in order to see what’s happening with the client there.

Been happening to my Shield. Whenever I play ASS (one of the only ones that Shield requests transcode to the server), playback would fail.

I reported the same problem with ASS subtitles here: Unable to play mkv videos with ASS subtitles (An error occurred while attempting to play this video). Do you want my Android logs?

Yes, the logs would be appreciated, thank you :plexheart:

@boblinthewild pointed out to me that this issue was already reported. Here’s my post with all logs. Please feel free to ask if something else is needed.

@DaveBinM Thanks for looking into this. Logs are attached (problem at the very end). Video container is MKV. Video is HEVC/x.265. Audio is AAC 5.1. ASS subtitles were on (actually forced; if I turn them off, no problem). Subtitle setting in Shield Plex client was set to “Automatic” (if I set to “Burn image only” no problem).

I’ve had a similar issue today (my app also updated to 8.24.0 according to the play store). If you turn off subtitles, the file plays fine. I’ve also done a temporary work-around by disabling Audio Passthrough (was HDMI) and I can play the file with subtitles.

Just to throw my two cents in here:
This issue occurs on both, my Shield TV and my OnePlus Nord 2, both running the latest beta from Google Play Store.
