Another oddball naming issue- with Star Trek Enterprise and TNG, but not with Voyager

You mean as a default for TV Shows libraries? I’m down, but I’m sure that would make some people here unhappy.

I think it’s fine as it is, as long as users are aware that the default is TMDB aired. Those who prefer TVDB, can switch to that manually.

It’s not like TVDB are perfect when it comes to metadata either. And if you want to get really technical there is an argument that TMDB are correct as Encounter at Farpoint was (afaik) a single double-length episode when it first aired. It was only split into two later down the line.

I am going to look deeper at this.

One part of me sees a scanner error.

I name S01E03 - The Naked Now but being numbered as if Episode 2.

IMHO, this is a fault.

You are correct. From the Wiki:

  • Originally shown as a Two-hour Pilot Movie, but in syndication is shown as 2 separate episodes.

TVDB is far from perfect, true. And two-parters/double episodes are handled very inconsistently.

Which episode does the info detail show for episode 2? Should be e01-e02.

Surely it’s working as designed. According to TMDB episode 2 is The Naked Now and episode 3 is Code of Honour. But I’d expect if you played episode 3 you’d get The Naked Now (as that’s what is S01E03 on your file system) despite what the metadata says.

The problem that you just posted was my ORIGINAL problem, but I have subsequently fixed it.
See below.

Exactly.

Does it not depend on which Database you use for ordering?

Especially since Plex ignores the episode name anyway.

Plex uses the Series name and SxxExx designator.

From there, TMDB / TheTVDB matter.
and then it goes even further when “Aired” vs “DVD” ordering when that exists.

I’m going to dig deeper in to this one.

Sure there’s a workaround but I am curious why PMS took my S01E03 and called it “Episode 2”. Yes, it is the second episode file in the season but that shouldn’t matter.

Hold that thought. I might have found it.

EDIT: Creating a new library section. Will know in 10 minutes or so.

Are you sure that it did? What was the file info in Plex for episode 2 (and 3 for that matter)? What actually played if you watched the episode?

I got the episode which matched the image. that’s correct.

Before I go any further, I’m testing what I think is a USER PROBLEM even I’m guilty of

:man_facepalming:

The hint was “changing to E01”

Would you please elaborate?

In my naming,

I use `Star Trek The Next Generation - S01E01-E02 - Encounter at Farpoint"

Plex standard is: S01E01E02

I’m using - as the field delimiter BUT use it in the Episode specifier too.

I renamed S01E01-E02 to S01E01E02 with full defaults.
Rebuilding new library section now

Errrm, I’ve always used the dash. No issues

I thought the dash was Plex naming standard, lol

I see it.

If a single file covers more than one episode, name it as follows:

/TV Shows/ShowName/Season 02/ShowName – s02e17-e18 – Optional_Info.ext

I am suspicious :smiling_imp:

I’m really not seeing what the issue is here. With the default library settings (I e. using TMDB) it seems Plex correctly identifies episode 2 as The Naked Now. If you change to use TVDB Aired then it correctly identifies episode 3 as the Naked Now.

This is nothing more than a difference in metadata between two sources.

You crack me up, Chuck. Switch to TVDB aired and call it a day (for now)

I posted just that in my original post.
