Any plans for Dolby Vision support for LG webOS?

Are there any plans to add Dolby Vision in MKV container suport for LG webOS? It was recently added to Plex for Android on the nvidia shield. It works well, but the problem there (with the Shield itself) is improper color reproduction for Dolby Vision in MKV. It would be cool if we could get this support on the webOS version as I’m sure the OLED TV itself would handle it properly. Nvidia seems to have zero interest in fixing the problem which is unfortunate.

Plex for Android support I suspect is possibly due to exoplayer. I would imagine that exoplayer isn’t supported on webos? But maybe that’s just a guess.

I too would be interested to know if it was possible, but at the moment I think it might be android only - unless there is a way to use exoplayer on LG TVs? I have no idea how the LG version works/what it plays with.

I just tried a Dolby Vision mkv on my lg c8. After a restart, it played back the file in Dolby Vision.

Can you upload a sample file? I tried with Profile 7 MEL and FEL too, but the B8 only played back in HDR.

The ones on the 4K Media site play fine on my OLED65B9SLA from a Windows Plex Media Server to the latest version of the WebOS “preview” app.
They are in .ts format though, I have not tried remuxing them to MKV.

OK, I tried remuxing to MKV, then it just showed a black screen. :open_mouth:
MKV support for DoVi is very new as I understand it?

I haven’t tried remuxing to MP4 instead, but I guess that should work better. But you need to play MKV containers specifically?

Yes, I would also like to know if the plex client on webOS will be updated to support dolby vision in mkv’s… they play fine in mp4 format, but not in mkv’s yet. Is there a timeline or possibility for this feature?

Files there at https://4kmedia.org/tag/dolby-vision/ are no longer accesible, and other ones i got do not play as Dolby Vision, just plain HDR…

Older MP4 DV files i had, that played fine and kicked DV logo on my older C7 are not recognized now on my new CX from USB port, and if opened with Plex they get transcoded into plain HDR.

Call me paranoid but im starting to suspect something fishy is going on with LG.

I had a C9 and now have a CX - several dual layer DV MP4s that would play fine in DV on the C9’s Plex app now only play in HDR on the CX.

There’s been some discussion on other forums like https://makemkv.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=18602&start=3510#p98654 that suggests the CX’s ability to play DV MP4s has been “restricted”.

I was able to play the example file from https://4kmedia.org/lg-amaze-dolby-vision-uhd-4k-demo/ in DV on the Plex app, so the CX can definitely still do it, just seemingly with less compatibility.

Fast: I just checked, it works fine to access and redownload the files at https://4kmedia.org/tag/dolby-vision/ . Maybe it was a temporary problem?
Try “LG Earth” or “LG Amaze”, click “More Details”, click “Download File”, click “Download anyway”. Put the .ts-file in a Plex library, play on LG TV (B9SLA for me) -> shows up as Dolby Vision.

It has something to do with profile 7 not being supported anymore on the CX, when it was supported on the C8 and C9
