Any problems with Plex Metadata Cache Servers?

Server Version#: Version 1.23.2.4656
Player Version#: Version 4.58.1

I’ve noticed that for the past few days updates from sources like TMDB are not making it to my plex server. I know it usually takes 24-48 hours for updates to pass through from source to target but it seems to be stuck.

Two examples:

  • Episode ratings (which I get from TMDB) have not come in for various shows which aired from mid last week. Fear the Walking Dead, Superman & Lois, The Flash, Bad Batch. Other shows earlier in the week have like Batwoman, Legends of tomorrow.
  • The episode title 1x7 for The Bad Batch is still TBA.

@drzoidberg33 mentioning you in case you know of some bug or delay.

@adriana is investigating.

I can confirm I’ve seen the same thing happening for a few weeks at least. I’m an active contributor for a lot of anime on TVDB and episode titles I’ve added even as much as a week ago have yet to make it to my Plex.

Some examples:

  • Show: “Digimon Adventure:” - Episode 52
  • Show: “Tropical-Rouge! Precure” - Episode 16
  • Show: “So I’m a Spider, So What?” - Episode 22
  • Show: “Seven Knights Revolution: Hero Successor” - Episode 11

I’ve personally added all of these on TVDB at least a week ago and in the case of Tropical-Rouge PC, there have been episode titles in there for up to S01E19 for well over a week.

In my experience, the details eventually make it to Plex, but I’m seeing delays of 3-4 days on average, sometimes as much as a week.

Thanks for confirming. I’m an active contributor over at the dark side (TMDB) and have noticed oddities in the last few weeks but seems to have stopped completely getting updates from mid last week. Let’s see what they come back and say.

@drzoidberg33 @adriana fyi… updates I was waiting on arrived this morning so guess if there was a problem its fixed for now. Thanks.

This did not happen for me. I’m running the same server (1.23.2.4656 on QNAP NAS).

One of the examples I listed above did get its metadata this morning, the others did not. And again, all of those were entered 7+ days ago on TVDB. I don’t believe the issue is resolved just yet @drzoidberg33

I take that back - sort of. I manually shut down the Plex server and restarted it (just the server, not the NAS itself) and now the server is finding the Metadata it was previously unable to find.

It solves the immediate issue but one wonders if there is a lingering bug there that needs fixing. I don’t really want to have to restart my server every time I add new media.

I’m seeing this issue with a host of shows as well:

  • Loki S1E2
  • iCarly (2021) S1E1, S1E2, S1E3
  • The Bad Batch S1E7
  • Home Before Dark S2E1

I have recently moved over to the Plex TV Agent and Refreshed Metadata for these shows but no luck.

I have just cleaned bundles & optimized the DB and going to try a full Metadata Refresh on the whole library (need to do anyway since switching to the Plex TV Agent.)

This is the only one that is not updated yet due to it only airing yesterday.

The rest of these should all be updated. Which episode ordering are you using?

Confirmed that a full metadata refresh fixed the others that I mentioned. As you said, iCarly is still not updated. Out of curiosity, what is the lag between updated on TVDB and able to be pulled into Plex? Sonarr is able to pull episode info/name correctly at download time, curious why Plex can’t also pull metadata.

Does Plex automatically pull metadata for episodes like this where it hasn’t been updated, or do I need to refresh every day to see when it is updated on the Plex Metadata servers?

I am using TVDB episode ordering.

EDIT 2: The Bad Batch S1E8 was just added - same deal - showing TBA/no metadata. Yet Sonarr auto-named it correctly, etc. and TVDB is updated with the metadata.

Thanks!

In my experience its anything between 12-48 hours when things are working with flow from the online source to plex target.

From time to time it appears to get stuck and needs a good kicking to get moving again

They’re querying the tvdb api directly. We have a cached version of the data that gets updated once a day, so depending on the time something is updated it could take up to 48 hours.

Yes, just make sure you have “Refresh library metadata periodically” enabled in Settings → Scheduled Tasks.

Ahh, bummer.

So Plex will automatically search for missing metadata every time the Scheduled Task runs with that selected?

Plex has successfully pulled metadata in the background for a few new shows/episodes - The Bad Batch, Physical. However metadata for iCarly (2021) is still not being pulled - can you have a look please? Thanks!

EDIT: Just wanted to pop in and say that metadata was eventually grabbed for those episodes of iCarly, but it seemed to take quite a while.

@adriana I wonder if there is some additional problems. For the show Birds of Prey the show level ratings are not arriving into plex at all. Some ratings where done over a week ago on TMDB but they have not made it to plex yet. One example is for S01E01 it has a rating of 5/10 on TMDB but on plex it only shows TVDB rating which is the fall back rating when none existed previously.

Took a quick look at this one. Appears to have the tmdb rating info on our side, at least now when I checked.

Mmmm, any reason why a force refresh on the show is not coming into my plex server? Have even nuked server side cache on my side.

Not sure. Could just be the Cloudflare cache for you has the old value still. I think this cache expires after 12 hours.

Okay thanks. Will report back in 24 hours so.
