Anyone get channels scanned in but not available in live TV?

I have the HDHomeRun Connect and a Mofu Leaf 50 (amplified) that I am using. Using an NVIDIA SHIELD as well.

I understand that I have some channels in the area that I am not scanning in, but is in the GUIDE CHANNELS drop down menu when setting up for DVR.

However, why in the world do I have so many DEVICE CHANNELS showing that do not show up in the GUIDE CHANNELS section? I can’t enable the channels even if I select an incorrect guide.

my.hdhomerun is scanning in 30-40 channels, but when I hook up to plex live tv, it shows all of the scanned channels until I get to the Program Guide section.

I am new to this stuff so I am not sure what I am even really looking at… at this point. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Picture below.

In the picture below, the white channels are ones I expected to get - the gray ones are ones I was able to scan in but can’t use.

I had this issue too. Gracenote use your zip code to match channels. But some times, it’s not accurate. Basically, Gracenote doesn’t think you received WITI, COZE NBC5, based on your zip code. Try different zip codes from your OTA market. I was able to fix it that way. It took me 5 tries before finding one filling up all my channels.

When I type my zip, or neighboring zip codes in I get the channels that are only in white, but some broadcasting towers are relatively far out. When I type in the search for zips near those towers, the channels in gray, they are listed there. So Plex cannot allow me all the channels I can scan in with my antenna?

No. You cannot watch channels that you don’t have guide info. You cannot set manual recordings too. Maybe they will add this later but I don’t know.

I’m from Canada, I live near the US border. I can get all major US broadcasters OTA. To get all the channels in the guide, I had to use a postal code in the middle from my OTA market and the US OTA market. So maybe you can try some zip codes in the middle between the 2 broadcast towers. I hope you will find one that will fill up everything. The only other alternative would be to try contacting Gracenote to make them fix there database.

Have you tried a zip code in the middle? Perhaps 49417 for Grand Haven Michigan based on channels shown in screenshot. seen a few posts from users close to border that could get US and Canada stations OTA but couldn’t configure DVR for both using their zip, picked one on border and were able to get them all.

Oddly enough - I tried facing Lansing since they have more towers and was able to get a couple less channels but found out some of them I couldn’t get were in WI. I just set a zip code for Ionia area. At least it gave me 100% of what got scanned in for now and I can play around with it later.

Now - if it would just load and play ANYTHING, tried every channel…

Have you tried viewing the channel outside of Plex using perhaps VLC. You can try a network stream in VLC by copying the link address for a channel on the HDHR. Go to my.hdhomerun.com, verify the firmware has a green checkmark and update if necessary.

Click the link for your HDHR Connect and click the Channel Lineup link.

Right click on a Channel and copy the link address.

Open VLC and choose Open Network Stream from the Media menu.

Paste the link into the enter a network URL box and click Play.

While the channel is playing you can go back to the my.hdhomerun.com and check the tuner status to see if you have a decent signal on the HDHR device.

Ah I like that. I seem to have most of this figured out.

Has anyone noticed that the SHIELD PMS crashes pretty often? My other servers never do. When selecting a channel - it loads for a while then says that the connection to the server was lost.

I did notice too. I came to the conclusion that PlexDVR on PMS 1.7.4 on Shield is pretty much unusable. A lot of crashes, recordings ending in the middle, recordings hanging at 100%. Live TV freezing, etc. The only time that I was able to get a full recording is when I recorded only 1 show at a time on channels that I know I have no impairments (I have few channels very far away (92 miles away) and those channels have sometimes impairments). Since I have no interest for live TV, I installed PMS 1.6.1 on my windows PC. Since I did that, I never had a single recording problem even on those far away channels. So for now, I use my PC to record with PMS 1.6.1 and waiting for new PMS release on Shield. I’m sure with time the will get it working properly.

Fair enough. I have a W10 PMS set up just for movies/tv shows. Maybe I will do something similar and set it up for DVR recordings and still keep it connected to the SHIELD for the live tv for the occasional times I want to use it.

I hooked all this up just recently so I’m glad to hear it isn’t localized to my setup.

Hah! @jkjamies Ionia’s zip code worked for me too, how nice to see an answer custom tailored from Michigan… don’t see that every day.

Although, it does seem that CourtTV is available having started May this year, and this doesn’t seem to be covered by any of the major cities (that I tried). I welcome on any suggestions/advice to get this listed as it is the only one that is not currently.

FWIW, it turns out you have to be a little more observant when linking channels. While the channels “match” the actual guides might not be for the located channels. You have to make sure the call letters actually match up.

In my case, channels 10.1-3 matched up, but they were for Grand Rapids and not from Lansing.

Long story short, my guide is better aligned with Battle Creek and not Grand Rapids – even though Plex matches me with Lansing from my zip code.

It would be great to be able to mix-and-match channels from different guides. FWIW, I have created a feature vote for this here:

Thank you for any votes and consideration.

Maybe this will help someone else, but I was able to get ALL channels (Court TV included) in my area by using XMLTV guide:

Final answer. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
