App won't start

Hello,

I had some problems earlier in the week, with Plex not finding any of my content (fyi I am using macOS Sequoia on a Synology NAS, seemingly problematic at the moment.) The situation seems to have righted itself, but now, the Plex app on my little Samsung UE22H5610 doesn’t start; it just begins, but gives up after 2 or 3 minutes. I deleted the app, and re-downloaded it, but the problem remains. Thanks for your advice.

Is Plex Media Server running on the Mac or on the Synology?

If on a Mac and experiencing trouble accessing media on a Synology, see Plex Files Unavailable but they’re not missing. It seems there is a problem with the SMB stack in macOS. The workaround is to use NFS instead of SMB. The thread also mentions nsmb.conf modifications that seem to help.

The TV is from 2014. That Plex client is no longer supported. You will need to acquire a streaming stick/box (Amazon, Apple, Roku, etc.) that runs a current Plex client.

Plex supports Samsung TVs from 2016 & later that run the Tizen OS. See Which Smart TV models are supported?

Your TV, an H series, is from 2014. See What Model Year is your Samsung TV?

Pre-Tizen Samsung TVs used a Plex client developed by an end-user, not by Plex. The app has not been updated in several years and no longer works with current versions of Plex Media Server.

Wow, thanks for your terrific response! Plex Media Server is running on the NAS (although I have a copy of it located, but not running, on the Mac. Should I have both?

You can run Plex Media Server on either system or both. Plex does not limit the number of servers on an account.

However, if it is working well for you now, then I would just leave it as is.

Thank you, earlier this week I lost access to everything. But yesterday evening, before I could add my name to reports of the Sequoia 15/Plex issues, things miraculously reappeared. So I am tempted to leave things as they are, as it’s all working right now.

I often watch films & TV on my TV, but I also have the desktop Plex app, as well as web browser players. And the Synology Disc Station player! Do you have any recommendations as what I should be using, as away from the TV, it all seems like a lot of Plex…

If running Plex on the Synology is working OK, then I would leave it alone.

At some point you may need or want additional capabilities, such hardware accelerated transcoding. However, you can address those in the future when needed.

Thanks. I will just leave things going as they are, then. One small point; I know it sounds a bit dumb, but how do I know what is running Plex Media Server, with all these Plex’s running around? :slightly_smiling_face: I usually watch my content on the one of the TVs or my MacBook.

I may well upgrade the transcoding capabilities of my machine, as sometimes it chokes a bit, but I don’t think I need to atm. Thanks so much for your support.

You mentioned earlier that it is running only on the Synology NAS. So, no matter which client you use (TV, phone, tablet, etc.), the stream will always come from Plex Media Server on the Synology NAS.

You can look at Authorized Devices to see servers that have been claimed by your account. You should remove any inactive servers. Do not remove your current server. Doing so will unclaim your server (you don’t lose anything, you just have to reclaim the server).

You can also login to Synology DSM and look in Package Center → Installed. Click on the PMS icon (not “open”) to see the installed version of PMS.

If you are not running Plex Media Server on your Mac, then you can uninstall it to free up some drive space. To completely uninstall see Plex DocumentationUninstall Plex Media Server.

Very useful easy to follow instructions, thanks.

One quick question if I may; I have borrowed an Amazon device, and got Plex up and running there - ta-ta!

But as the TV is not large, I often have to have subtitles on. I wonder if you know how I can change/turn off and on the subtitles? I am going off for an exploration now, to see if I can answer my own question.

Account Settings

Make sure your account subtitle settings are configured as desired.

Android TV Device

In the Plex Android TV app settings, you can set the desired color. This works only for text subtitles (SRT).

Before playback, you can select the desired subtitle from the pre-play screen for the movie/episode/video. Select the three dots to the right of the play button, then Playback Settings.

During playback, bring up the onscreen controls (tap the bottom of the ring on the remote). The icon on the far left is for subtitles. You can also choose the three dots on the far right, then choose playback settings.

Hello, I have been trying to completely remove the Plex Media Server from my Macbook, as shown here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/

The problem is, using the Finder’s “Go” menu doesn’t result in anything resembling what the webpage tells me, i.e. ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/ and the other two files aren’t one my system. Have Apple recently changed the way searches via Go>Go To Folder… works? It seems different in appearance.

Should I skip straight to the Terminal instructions? I think I must still have it installed, as my Home Screen on the TV allows me to access both the NAS and Plex on my computer. Thank you.

If Plex is running on your Mac, it should be displayed in the menu bar. From there, you can stop/exit the program. Then, go into Applications, drag the Plex Media Server application to the trash, and empty the trash.

That will stop Plex Media Server from running on your Mac.

If the libraries still appear on your TV, etc., unpin them from the home page.

I’m not sure about the files in ~/Library. My MacBook is too old to run Plex. I’ve no way to verify their location. Leaving the files will not hurt anything, but they do take up some space on the system.

Many thanks. Plex running on the Mac is no longer appearing on my TV Home Screen. It took a couple of days to ‘trickle through’ as it were from when I deleted it from the MacBook.

I think that’s me all set up for now, as I figured out how to change my subs settings in the Amazon app. I appreciate your help!

Hello, I seem to have hit a snag. When I start up the Plex app on my Panasinbic TV, instead of displaying what I had been seeing a few weeks ago, I am presented with a different layout to what I usually get. I have to click through a couple of screens to get to that.

This is what I see first:

then have to choose More (i.e. the three dots at the bottom of the list at the left) which leads to the following display:

I’d not previously had ‘Plex’ as an option before. I have deleted the Plex app from my computer, which I would have thought would remove ‘Plex’ as a server option - all my movies and TV are on my NAS.

Choosing NAS leads me to me to my expected screen:

I think I have to somehow hide the ‘access’ to Plex (even though it’s deleted.)

Many thanks
Ben

You simply need to “pin” these media libraries to the side bar again. The Home page follows the side bar.
