It would be nice to be able to adjust MPV’s default scaling options for the apple 4k tv, the default which is bilinear sucks really badly, on windows (https://support.plex.tv/articles/207338798-advanced-configuration/) we can already do this by editing the mpv.conf file but with the apple 4k tv we are unable to access and make changes to this.
Is there a way to set the MPV scaler used with the Apple 4K TV somewhere server side?
We have set the best scaler that the Apple TV 4K can handle performance wise. We spent a good deal of time experimenting with different options before settling on what we have now. Should a new model come out with more power, we’ll revisit it then
You can’t lump all SD footage in together, as it really depends on the codec, and whether it’s hardware decoded video, or if it’s something software decoded, not to mention the bitrate of the video too
Wanted to update this, Infuse Pro 7 has a modified Lanczos scaler that is really decent and works with both gen 1 and gen 2 Apple 4K TV with SD content connected with plex.
This has become a extreme nuisance dealing with the Apple 4K TV’s poor SD scaling with plex.
I moved to a HTPC using Plex’s HTPC app for a while and while it handled SD scaling using its scaling options, I lost all HDR and Dolby Vision capabilities unless I used Kodi + Plex for Kodi (which hasn’t been updated in years… nice… ). Super buggy.
The native Plex app is absolutely beautiful and being forced to use the ugly trash that is Kodi and Plex for Kodi is extremely upsetting, after all that it doesn’t have Dolby Vision either (understandably why it doesnt on the HTPC app).
I then moved to the Nvidia Shield with Plex and its scaler for SD was just as bad if not worse and to top it off it cant even handle ASS subs properly without Kodi which I want to avoid since we are back at it again with the ugly clunky UI that hasn’t been updated in years and to go without Dolby Vision support.
But at least I had options to adjust scalers with Kodi I guess.
I was gonna call it a day and pay the outrageous Infuse Pro 7 lifetime fee to get the better SD scaling but I bought the 1 month to test it and it lacks proper Dolby Vision support.
Its always one step forward one step back.
We should not have to rely on 3rd partys to get a better viewing experience from Plex.
Plex’s Apple 4K TV app is so close to being a place where I can easily watch all my content properly but as of now even with 3 difference devices I cant get a proper viewing experience without stupid compromises and feature breaking nonsense.
I would even take the Shield instead of the Apple 4K TV if ASS subs were usable without transconding + better SD scaling in the native Plex app for the shield.
