Apple Player Update Beta Testing

I have tried the beta with various videos, mostly 1080p ones. Some still stutter a lot, some don’t. It’s hard to see any pattern. Some videos that stuttered before are now smooth, while the situation is the opposite for other videos. Perhaps those who have a lot of 4K UHD videos with HDR get a better experience.
I found the two Danish TV-serials Det forsvundne ravkammer and Mysteriet på Bornholm to stutter so much that I had no choice but to switch to Infuse. The opening credits were especially bad.

(For downloads try yt-dlp.)

which exact version (build) of the beta are you on?
what hardware / OS version?

Please forward the information as @tom80H has kindly requested and check out how to provide a Sample Video for others to check out and compare. Thank you.

Hey everyone, me again with a minor update.

Thanks so much for all the testing so far.
We are continuing to investigate the HDR and Dolby Vision issues.
Namely, HDR has incorrect colors and/or color banding issues.
For Dolby Vision, the HDR fallback is not occurring correctly.

I’ll ping in this post when I have more info and when we have a new build.
When that new build is released, I’ll also add all the new volunteers who have signed up so I can better review the feedback.

Thanks for the update Craig!

Thanks for the update Craig.

Specifically with this…are you saying that we are finally getting away from the awful “Fake DV” with profile 7 and that the files will now fall back to HDR once this issue…

…is addressed?

That would be great.

That is my understanding but my team members may clarify if I’m incorrect.
I’m not privy on the historical context of past limitations, so I’m only coming from a place of what I believe it should be.

That’s not very nice, is it?

Please keep this thread on topic. Not saying that’s not a suggestion worth discussing, but we’re trying to keep focus on the issue at hand here. :slightly_smiling_face:

Hey y’all,

I am popping back in to give some type of update.

I am still investigating the fixes for this, but I am also working through a backlog of other features.

Rest assured, this issue is still a priority for me. It has not been forgotten.

Also noticed another bug with the new build.

PiP and rotation seem to be broken on the new build of mpv on iOS.

Installing the App Store version fixes this issue.

Literally no issues with this beta for me other than the fact it’s about to expire and send us back to stutter town

Hi everyone! We’re aware of the time left on the TF build, and plan on having an updated one before the expiration date. We understand some folks are frustrated, believe us. We’re users too, and we’re working hard to get this over the finish line as soon as possible.

Also, please keep the discussions on topic, specifically about issues and other feedback related to the test builds.

It’s fine if you’re using alternative hardware or players, do what’s best for you, but that in no way helps what we’re trying to do here. And I really don’t want to start policing this thread, as that’s a waste of time for all of us.

Craig will post an update as soon as there’s a new build available to test, along with what’s included/updated.

Good stuff. How are you going to manage the TF builds though? There seems to be 2 tracks at the moment, and whilst it’s easy to keep on top of at the moment, because there was only ever one release pertinent to this thread, there is also the main TF builds which will supersede any others unless the user turns off automatic TF upgrades and keeps a close eye on what’s going on.

Cheers!

Great question!

We have a dedicated group in TestFlight for these builds, but unfortunately Apple doesn’t expose the build groups in TF for external testers. As such, having automatic updates turned off is needed to test this build over time and yes, keeping an eye out for updates. This should happen automatically when you “get off track” and install a specific TF build.

Besides communicating here, we’ll also ensure we include something in the build release notes.

Once we’re ready to release and include the changes in the main beta track, we’ll also announce it here so folks can re-enable automatic updates in TF.

Once you select an old built in TF, it will stay there. Easy, as a beta tester you can handle it.

I just added everyone to the public beta list as well, so you now have access to all our recent TF builds.

Hi again folks!

So, some updates:

  1. We’ve updated TestFlight with new builds for testing.
  2. The original post for this thread has been updated with testing details, but here’s a summary for those following along.
  3. We’ve sent TestFlight invites to people who had signed up and were waiting to be enrolled.

How To Test

Via TestFlight, download and install version 8.37 (8587). The build should also contain a messaging in the “what to test” section that signals it’s part of this test initiative.

Note: for folks who were testing the previous build, we also put out a refreshed build: 8.37 (8585). This build has been rebased on latest app changes, but contains no other player-related improvements and should not be used as basis for feedback.

Known Issues

There are currently the following known issues with the latest test build:

  • Memory Pressure: on certain demanding files (e.g. high bitrate 4K HDR movie) memory pressure can cause the app to crash.
  • Subtitle issues:
    • SRT subtitles don’t correctly render when more than one line on screen.
    • PGS subtitles are not being displayed.
    • ASS subtitles only have partial support.

Feedback

As mentioned earlier, please provide feedback in this thread and don’t forget to share logs and device information.

Finally, please keep the thread focused solely on feedback for build 8.37 (8587). You’re free to start any other thread to discuss whatever you want

Good morning everyone!

First of all, thank you for taking the time and providing great feedback posts! I’ll quote & respond to a few below but know that I’ve read every single one of them and, as mentioned earlier, acknoledging they’ve been added for internal tracking.

If I have one ask, as you might see from  is that you please collect some logs when reporting issues, as those help immensely!

Also, if you’re having problems with specific types of media, please share a sample file when reporting issues.

@anders_m72, @ckdxxx & @Xhaka can you please share logs?

Thanks for the logs! Everything does look as it should

If you set the video to old player you’re not testing any of the new stuff in this build, but using Apple’s native player instead. Also, we’re specifically asking to not provide feedback on build 8585.

Weird. Even after restarting TF and/or tvOS? Can you shoot me your email in a DM so I can verify?
