Apple Player Update Beta Testing

Latest beta, which is 2026.7.0, build 1660. You’re 2 versions behind with 1646. Probably why yoiu’re not experiencing any crashes

My Bad just checked I’m using 2026.7.0 (1660), getting old, memory is going. Yeah No crash on start up

Needed to delete and re-install. Seems that it wasn’t verifying my account and instead of asking me to sign-in, it just exited after the Splash Screen. Re-installing and opening asked to link to my account.

New update:

Here is my feedback in terms of bugs I am/have experienced in the past in regards to this new version:

  • I am seeing a difference when it comes to selecting a TV show under “Continue Watching” and what item it automatically highlights for selection, though the results are very mixed. Sometimes when I freshly launch the app, it does as it should by selecting the next up episode. Sometimes it still does the thing where I have to press down on the remote to go to the seasons bar, down again for it to select the episode description, and then down again to select the episode. One time I have seen it briefly highlight the episode (for like maybe a single second) and then revert its selection up to the top again. Another time it auto highlighted the “Watch” button. But, once I go down to highlight the next up episode, it then seems to work properly for other shows from that point until I hard close the app. All in all, it does seem like some attention was paid to this issue, though to be honest I never tested it to this extent before, so maybe it always had this behavior.
  • At one point I could swear that the app wasn’t properly hiding items from the browse page that are within collections that are supposed to hide their items. Maybe I mistook items that I think should have been hidden but I wasn’t correctly setting to do so (i.e. in other collections set to show their items). Regardless, that doesn’t seem to be an issue now.
  • One issue I had today when checking for the hidden items is that when I was scrolling down the browse page using the letters on the side, I got stuck where I could only go up and down on that scroll bar, and selecting a letter did not adjust the page to show items starting with it, and I could also not move my selection to items within the page. All I could do was press back and it would take me to the libraries, or go up to the seasons bar. I haven’t been able to replicate this issue though since I first got it.

Again, I want to give the devs a thumbs up for continuing to communicate more frequently the progress being made on this. From my side, as someone who has a Samsung TV which does not do DV, and thus cannot attest to that side of things, once the continue watching issue has been fully and reliable fixed, I am not sure what is holding it back from being release ready. I didn’t mess with the new Roku app when it launched but from the actual issues people were reporting, this doesn’t seem to have any of those. I can’t see how this would cause as much of an uproar as when the Roku app launched, other than the inherent blowback it will receive regarding the UI, which I have to say, coming from Infuse, I’d take any day.

On tvOS 26.4, for what it is worth.

Still not using the “Apple Way” for captions (I guess they never will)

I’ve given up on them doing anything the right way at this point. They are determined to re-invent the wheel and make it as square as possible.

I’d just like to NOT have subtitles defaulted for LiveTV, amongst ALWAYS transcoding. I’d really enjoy the former first. It’s very annoying to have to cycle on then off and then it resets to the beginning of the stream.

However, these ‘smaller’ things are greatly reduced from where we were just a few months ago.

They also added the splash screen to this build on first startup which makes me think they are close…

@Atomatth confirmed today that the Continue Watching Focus and LiveTV subtitles always being on is on their radar on my post here

After opening the beta app today for the first time in a while, I was greeted by by a set of “What’s New” screens highlighting the updated UI and layout, so I assume the release date isn’t too far off.

There have clearly been some improvements to the new player, it feels noticeably more responsive than before. That said, it’s still nowhere near as good as the old native player, which isn’t surprising. The +/-10s skip shortcuts are incorrectly mapped on my older Siri Remote, which I believe has already been mentioned in this thread.

More generally, the UI also feels a lot more responsive now. Previously, it would very quickly turn into a stuttering mess when navigating my (small) library on an Apple TV 4K (1st gen). The new library layout, however, is still not great.

The only reason I gave the new app another shot was to play the only multi-part movie in my library, which Infuse doesn’t support. Unfortunately, that’s completely broken in this beta, and also on the iOS app. I get that this is probably a niche use case these days, but it still works fine for me on the old Apple TV app and on the web.

I just made my own topic about this but I wanted to chime in here as well for more visibility. Would love to hear word if devs are planning on adopting HDR10+ for the official release of the new app, or at some point after its release. I have a Samsung TV and since I was using Infuse for so long, I did not even realize the Plex app on Apple TV does not use HDR10+, and that the beta app currently also does not. Would love if a dev could comment on this to clarify if this is something they are or are planning to work on.

@Craig_Holliday Can we get some sort of update from a Plex employee on where this is at? I was on the initial TestFlight for the new experience Plex for tvOS and it had solved all of the audio sync issues I was having and seemed to play great which I reported several times. Since then, I’m no longer on the TestFlight and seem to still be stuck with the old version from years ago? Can a few of us get on the TestFlighta again? Or are you guys very close to FINALLY releasing the new version for us? Tired of being left in the dark..

Agreed. The devs really need to start communicating more now that things seem to be picking up with the app. I appreciate that they are finally updating the beta release notes again and that @Atomatth addressed a few UI bugs in a topic a couple days ago, but I think at this point, not being more transparent about its direction/progress is fueling the tvOS userbase negativity more than if they were a bit open about its state. I think just a rough roadmap wouldn’t be a bad idea. Just something!

i used to be in the beta and then all of a sudden i wasn’t. this was a year ago. so every now and then i just see if the beta isn’t full anymore. always full. there was a period where if you speak up they’ll add you. i wasn’t added. so frustrating because when i was in the beta i was providing feedback.

Has anyone seen an issue with ATV 2026.8.0 (1675). Shutting down from Live TV (OTA) on the ATV, creates a loop of not being able to start up again. The only way I have found is to access via TV remote to see the Home page. Then shutting down the ATV once again allows normal access.

Secondly when using OTA TV guide, navigating to the channels is awkward. You must navigate across the headers first to Home to reach the Channels of the guide. There is no direct navigation available from the Live TV header.

Yeah, focus is definitely weird in this release. I’ve also noticed that it an be challenging to back out of live TV after viewing by using just the < button on the Siri Remote, at least at times. I think the focus problems were ack’d by a Plex employee in another thread, but I can’t remember which one off the top of my head.

I’m experiencing sync issues with the latest beta release.

Version 2026.9.0 dropped. Still didn’t fix the focus issue. Or at least not consistently. When I first clicked a “Continue Watching” show, the focus was on the next episode, but after hard exiting the program and restarting it and trying again, it did the same thing where I had to select down to select the season bar, then description, then the episode.

But glad to see that they’re updating this at a pretty steady clip!

So Atmos detection has been added, but it doesn’t play Atmos..

Is it possible to get a reply from someone at Plex about the state of Dolby Vision playback and if Atmos is going to be supported?

Yeah, I have been trying to get them to put some kind of roadmap out there, including any plans for HDR10+. I understand they don’t want to set expectations too high since the tvOS userbase is very unhappy, but I think they could just mention a few things they’re working on even if not giving any dates.
