Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

Almost 10 months since any official feedback (for something an employee can reproduce.)

Even for Plex…that’s a whole new level of pathetic. .

I’m also experiencing this. Has only started for me recently

For those that started experiencing this recently it may be due to an apple system bug introduced in tvOS 16. The guys over at infuse have also been dealing with this issue so really not sure when Plex will fix this or if they have to wait for a fix from Apple. Anyway, here is what they said on the infuse forums.

The issue is due to a system bug Apple has introduced in tvOS 16 (and it appears to remain in place in tvOS 16.1 as well).

In essence, there are different APIs used by Infuse for video and audio playback that are reporting mismatched timestamps in certain cases which results in the audio sync issues some are seeing. We’re working to prepare a sample app that will showcase the core issue to Apple, so hopefully they will be able see the issue and fix it.

Also, in a later reply:

Apple makes a number of APIs available audio and video playback. One app may use a certain set of APIs while another app may use a different combination. Since the bug is only present with certain APIs some apps will be affected while others may not.

With that said, we believe we may have uncovered the root cause (or at least a contributing factor) as to why these APIs are having trouble in Infuse and other apps. This still appears to be a system bug introduced in tvOS 16, but is something we may be able to work around.

@DaveBinM is Plex aware of / trying to fix any issues with Audio Sync? Cheers.

Seems like the tvOS 16 bug has really caused some trouble. I’m having the same issue. I heard the 1st gen 4K ATV doesn’t have enough processing power?
Good on infuse for being open and transparent. Over here at Plex we’re not even sure the development team is aware there is an issue.

Yeah, I think the Plex staff needs to say something now. No matter if it’s a tvOS 16 bug or not, it’s a huge issue with the Apple TV Plex player. We need to know what’s happening.

Also, what is that about the 1st gen 4K ATV? Not enough processing power to do what?

I just swapped from my Google TV to Apple TV HD. The Google TV used to have audio sync issues but that was fixed when I turned off the direct audio passthrough. The Apple TV is much more powerful, but has had sync issues the entire time so far. I saw a tip earlier about turning off frame rate matching and I feel like that made a difference, but I think I still notice issues (which is why I found this thread). What is going on here? I hope someone from Plex can give us some updates on this. Thanks!

From a quick test it looks like latest Infuse beta has fixed this for me! They found a workaround in their use of some API’s. Hopefully the Plex devs can piggyback off of this.

And maybe society will cure cancer. Let’s see who wins…

Yes, we are aware of issues with Audio Sync, and are looking at the available API options

Wow, so Plex staff do read this forum. Well, while you look at the recent tvOS 16 issues could please look back in this thread and fix the 4K audio sync issue that has been present long before tvOS 16 came out! Like many I have had to pay extra to get Infuse in order to watch 4K content from my Plex server. Thank you

Oh. my. god. Someone at Plex is actually doing work! I was starting to think I was more likely to win the $1B Powerball, buy Plex (the company) and order the team to fix this than actually having Plex acknowledge there was an issue.

We do, and apologies for not replying earlier when I was pinged. I was off that day, but back today after the weekend. Myself and other employees (including some former employees) have previously commented on this thread, almost since its beginning, so it’s something we are aware of and have been keeping track of.

this has been the first response from an employee (you) since February… this issue is pre tvOS16, tvOS16 is not the problem, may have made it worst, but its not the issue.

" Myself and other employees (including some former employees) have previously commented on this thread, almost since its beginning, so it’s something we are aware of and have been keeping track of."

That is a disingenuous response. this issue has been basically ignored since it was first reported now almost THREE YEARS AGO. The only fix is to use another player all together.

we have all paid for this product and at the same time are willing to give you information and logs that paid QA testers would provide. What more do you guys want or need?

You’re talking about iOS in a thread about an Apple TV issue, though. Do you mean tvOS, or are you trying to conflate a new tvOS 16 issue with an old issue you have with the iOS app?

TVoS, edited but the issue exists on my iphone too, also have to use infuse on that

Sorry, typo by me too. Meant tvOS 16, corrected.

Here’s the link to that Infuse thread :

They have a beta out with a workaround that may fix some/all of this. I signed up for the beta, waiting to hear back, will update here if any success.

Facing the same issue on my Apple TV. Really don’t want to use a different player

November 2022, and this issue is still going. So much for “a fix soon”.
