Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

You should be able to confirm if you’re experiencing dropped frames by turning on Enhanced Video Player Debug and monitoring the Dropped frames section

Installed the newly 8.18 version in both my Apple TVs. My setups:
Living Room: Apple TV 4k (2021) → LG TV (2018)
Bed room : Apple TV 4k (first generation) → LG TV (2013)

In both Apple TVs, tested multiple files, and ended up adjusting +250ms in the new available setting, and that’s it!
I find it’s curious the delay required to fix (+250ms) is precisely the same, even with different HW (Apple TVs and TVs). Anyway, the problem is solved for me, finally!

So it’s been 3years and 3months… has someone at Plex actually been able to recreate this out of sync audio problem when Match Frame rate is set to on while playing 24fps content… yet? :flushed:

I wrote my first comment two weeks ago and tagged @DaveBinM
I didn’t get a response so now I will try again.
I apologize if my comment sounds rude. I am not native English speaking.

Hello @DaveBinM
When will my Plex work?
When I play video files I have an audio delay. I also have white text covering the top and left side of the screen.
Thank you

I have installed version 8.18 on my TV but I don’t see the option to adjust the sound sync in settings. Where can I find it?

Me too…I’ve installed 8.18 but no sign of the audio offset option in the Playback Settings menu.
I guess still not enabled for everyone? :slightly_frowning_face:

I believe you need to be one of the anointed “beta” testers with a flag on your account (which they are no longer adding) in order to try a feature to work around a known problem. ¯(ツ)/¯

Any reason why it isn’t widely available?

Cause they don’t care lol

Thanks for explaining. I wondered why I couldn’t find it.

It’s beyond a joke now

@DaveBinM Just updated my AppleTV 4K 128gb model to tvOS 16.4.1 and the Plex app to 8.1.8. What my testing finds is:

  1. Most files have greatly improved or nearly perfect audio sync in this version with match range and frame rate set to on.
  2. Everything direct plays (even 4K HDR) unless a TrueHD audio track is selected. For example Kingsman: The Secret Service 4K HDR 7.1 DTS-HD direct plays and the audio sync is perfect (Source file is my USA 4K blu ray disk via makemkv).
  3. I haven’t noticed any dropped frames yet, however I will keep testing.
  4. No A/V sync controls are available in playback settings.

Will the new audio engine you guys are building allow direct play of TrueHD audio tracks? That will be awesome if so! As it seems to be the only reason some of my blu ray files won’t direct play.

Edit: just to note, all of my files are sourced directly from Blu-ray disk or 4K UHD blu-ray disk using MakeMKV. That way I know it’s not the file itself at fault if I encounter any trouble.

The new audio engine won’t add TrueHD decoding to the client side. That’s a licensing issue, and not a technical one.

As I’ve said to you before, please try and be constructive in your posts, and not just snarky.
We do care about this issue, as we’ve worked on implementing a new audio engine, tested it with select users from here, and are continuing to work on it and add additional features to it.

The text is due to you turning on the debug overlay for the advanced player. You need to turn it off again. As for timelines, we don’t provide any, I’m afraid.

How does dts-hd direct play in the Plex app when Plex won’t license the codec and the AppleTV doesn’t natively support it?

Oh ok thanks for the info. Do you think Plex will work out the licensing issues so it can properly decode TrueHD on the client side in the future?

As a lifetime Plex Pass user, I wouldn’t be opposed to paying for a “premium plex player” that could decode all the audio video codecs client side. As it stands now you have a pretty large Plex user base using Infuse strictly because it decodes everything natively and allows direct play of everything without issue.

A premium Plex app designed for the Home Theatre that decodes everything natively without issue? I’d happily pay for such an app. So just throwing that our there to the Plex team

I have no clue, I just know everything outside of TrueHD audio is direct playing for me regardless if it’s 1080p or 4K HDR/Dovi. For example I have the Dredd blu-ray and that has a 7.1 DTS-HD track and it direct plays just fine. Not sure how if they don’t have the proper codecs but I’m not complaining lol the audio sync on that movie is pretty spot on for me as well.

If you have Audio Format set to Auto on AppleTV and using Direct Play on Plex… isn’t Plex just going to forward the encoded/compressed audio to AppleTV and the Apple TV will decode it “as [lossless,] uncompressed LPMC” that then gets sent to your receiver [multi-channel LPCM (up to 7.1 channels and 24-bit)]?

So shouldn’t you be able to play ANY encoded audio format that AppleTV supports by doing this?

It won’t light up your receiver, because the receiver is not doing the [decoding]… but you should get same result… no? You’ll see “PCM” or “Multi-Channel” displayed on reciever.

Not exactly. For example, Atmos and DTS:X metadata cannot be sent to the AVR properly with this approach, which means that those of us with height channels (I have a 5.1.4 setup, for example) will not have any benefit from Atmos or DTS:X enabeld content. Also, by just handing off to the Apple TV, you are at the mercy of Apple and what codecs they can decode, which is decent, but not 100%.

The best choice right now to get the most out of your Plex library with the Apple TV is Infuse, which is a sad state of affairs. Even using Infuse, the limitation of tvOS prevent them from handling Atmos / DTS:X, though Infuse is at least willing to pay for Dolby and DTS licenses to make their app as good as it possibly can be.

I understand the feedback from Plex employees in this thread, and I am glad to hear that they are working on a new audio engine, but they’re getting beaten like a drum by Infuse on the same platform, and their progress has been absolutely glacial. Responses that “we don’t provide support” and “we don’t provide timelines for new features” don’t help the matter, even though those may be Plex’s policies.

I’m a longtime Plex Pass holder with a lifetime investment, a large library, and a desire to get the absolute best home theater experience. I recently purchased a Zidoo Z9X media player, which destroys the Apple TV with the absolute best picture quality on the market, and support for every video and audio codec under the sun. Unfortunately, it doesn’t support Plex, so I have to connect it to my NAS over SMB and re-index everything using their inferior library management.

Sigh. I wish Plex would invest in the high-end again. At this point, it seems to be hell-bent on a race to the bottom of ad-supported streaming services.
