Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

On a slightly different topic… Assuming the new audio offset parameter (which some people are testing) isn’t creating problems, could it go to GA soon? I think that would go a long way to at least bring the temperature down a few degrees here.

I’ll be concise with my questions, maybe I can receive a concise answer as opposed to a cryptic or veiled one?

Will Plex play Dolby Atmos in the near future?

Will Dolby Vision be supported properly?

Do you think that the lip sync issue has an imminent resolution? I was part of the experimental changes and for me it only slightly improved the issue. I did provide samples and feedback. Not sure if anything has changed again since then, because I’ve kind of refrained from using Plex as a client because I find it unusable because I am a stickler for audio and picture quality and I am particularly sensitive to lip sync issues.

I agree, I think this definitely should be released as soon as possible.

But that said, I think this audio offset parameter should be a per item setting and NOT a global one like it seems to be right now according to those that are testing it. Not all movies/TV shows seem to be affected by audio sync issues. And the items that have a sync issue might not be all affected the same way. So having it as a global setting means you’ll always have to adjust it depending on what you’re playing.

You keep asking everyone to adhere to the guidelines and be constructive, but that does not seem to help. When I asked whether you understand why everyone is so frustrated, you did not reply. I’m sure you do, but I’m going to spell out the obvious anyway.

  1. 3 years ago the users trusted Plex to fix this issue. Now that trust is gone and was replaced by frustration. You’ll either need to win the trust back, or not expect the users to trust you.
  2. You should acknowledge that Plex has handled this issue badly and apologize for that.
  3. You should explain why it is taking so long, assure that currently you are handling it differently (seems like you do), and that you are aiming for a proper fix without compromises.
  4. You seem to have a policy of not sharing plan or timelines, but there is no reason why in this case you couldn’t make an exception and share how do you see the roadmap for getting out of this mess

When I asked you directly why it’s taking years you did not reply. Most likely you don’t have a good answer to this question. If you are not willing to be transparent and acknowledge mistakes, and you are not willing to tolerate the frustration of your own users, you might as well close this topic already. It’s not going to get constructive again just because you ask for it for a 10th time.

Please don’t close the thread.

I appreciate the efforts to moderate the forum tone. I disagree that any individual or company needs to tolerate rudeness or insults.

Thank you for sharing information when it is available. I hope you continue to do so.

I never said that it’s OK to be rude or insult people. My point is that Plex should either grow up and communicate properly what’s going on with this issue, or accept that the frustration will continue to grow and the users will continue to express it in this topic.

There are three apps made by Plex I’m heavily using. The Plex server (of course), The Apple TV player app, and Plexamp.

Plexamp is amazing and the best app made by Plex by far. I love it. I understand you’re angry, but the way Plexamp is developed and managed is great. I really don’t what that to change.

The solution would be for Plex to put the same kind of love, passion, and expertise into the development of the Apple TV app too. I don’t know if it’s something like love or expertise, but with the kind of issue this thread is about and with all the severe regressions regularly introduced with new releases, I do agree this app is definitely missing something critical right now.

I’ve come to the conclusion that I just need to move on from Plex on the ATV4K.

Other than the Shield Pro (I’ve had several and it has its own Plex issues) are there other clients that Plex will support Atmos on?

Is there a table or something that compares client features?

I considered getting a Raspberry Pi 4 and trying that but can find very little info about it on here.

Don’t really want to be going down the HTPC route either because I have enough Windows devices to maintain updates and security on!

PlexAmp is the only music app I use as well and I agree it is fantastic! Such a shame we can’t say the same for the Plex video player just yet, but I’m optimistic.

Maybe Plex needs to cut down on how many devices it’s available on so they can have more resources working to make the clients more robust and powerful? Just a thought.

It’s easy to forget that Plex does nearly everything right with PMS, PlexAmp and all the different ways you can customize your home media content, so while I am critical of the speed in which a fix has been rolled out to AppleTV users, I will be so happy when I no longer have to come to the forums and talk about this issue lol.

Onwards and upwards Plex team!

They’re hoping eventually everyone will get bored of being stonewalled and the thread can be closed.

Some guys are (beta) testing it right now, correct? I hope the fix is just around the corner, it’s so frustrating.

Yes. Made next to no difference for me unfortunately.

While I won’t let Plex off the hook completely, doing a bit more research I think Apple has to take a lot of the blame here. The codecs/formats it support natively is pretty bad across tvOS, MacOS and iOS/iPadOS. So I think I get what @DaveBinM means when he’s saying it’s related to the way Apple handles audio APIs.

So I did some additional testing of my own today. For those that have pretty modern TVs, Plex plays pretty much like an HTPC on my Sony TV! Only issue I’ve found is it has to transcode VC-1 codecs unfortunately (that’s to do with Sony) but it has audio passthrough and supports everything my current system can handle. Shocked I didn’t try Plex on it before going the AppleTV route.

Plex on the Sony TV is even smoother than Infuse when playing 1080i content to my delightful surprise. Infuse is pretty flawless so I wasn’t expecting the Plex app on my Sony TV to look better than Infuse. I always hear negative things about the Plex app on smart TVs so I never bothered to install it and find out for myself. Boy am I glad I did!!

It’s directly playing everything (outside of the VC-1 codec) and I get the DTS and Dolby logos to light up on my sound bar. And dare I say the picture quality on mine is fantastic and switching back to Infuse + AppleTV I’m noticing a greenish/red tint to the picture? Anyone else notice that on ATV4K?

I think we have to remember to choose devices that support the file formats and codecs we have in our libraries, and to make sure we keep our equipment up to date! Never would’ve thought Plex would play so good on my TV but I’m gonna test this setup throughly over the coming weeks and maybe it’s time to say goodbye to the ATV 4K. Time will tell!

That’s good to hear. I’ve been doing some more testing with the Apple TV 4K (2022) also, and I think for sure some of the blame lays at the door or Apple. Modern Family on Disney+ exhibits lip sync issues, and the audio sync drifts so not possible to fix with a delay.

I also have a Sony tv (A90J) so will also give Plex a whirl on the TV.

Thanks for the heads up and I’ll report back.

Yet Infuse is fine…

Well well well… Plex app on my Sony TV is head and shoulders above the Apple TV app. Only thing with the Apple TV is that the interface is much snappier.

I get Atmos, no lip sync issues and DTS HD passes through just fine. Yet to try anything else.

I’ll use this on my Sony TV for now and just keep an eye on this thread!

To be honest, only thing I would still need the Apple TV for is my iTunes movies (extras etc) and Apple Music.

Cool yeah I have the X90J and I think they both run the same OS (Google TV) so hopefully you get some of the same results! Pretty impressed so far and the only thing I’ve yet to test which I absolutely love about the ATV4K, is bluetooth audio with headphones. If the X90J can do that well (it supports bluetooth headphones) it may be a winner for me.

I’m actually gobsmacked at how much better the Plex app is on my Sony TV. Plex has always been dreadful on smart TVs when I have tried it previously. I think this may be the same one that the Shield runs?

I also have an LG C1 in another room and on that it was awful.

Anyway, doesn’t fix the ATV app issues but is a decent enough alternative for me.

Hello, quick update.
I’ve disabled hdmi bitstream on my LG C1 in the audio options, so forcing PCM.
I don’t have delay anymore with the ATV, and the manual audio delay settings is at 0ms.

Is the problem related to ATV while bitstreaming ? My ATV is set to auto…
Is the Lg c1 delaying the audio by postprocessing it while bitstream is enabled ?
But, I had delay only in the Plex app, so I don’t understand what’s happening.
