Apple TV 4K audio sync issues with enhanced player

We will see soon enough. However the article doesn’t mention 59.xxx fps vs 60 fps (other than in passing), and I get audio sync issues with OTA recordings.

Even if this is an Apple issue, every other app on the Apple TV has managed to work around it. The fact that Plex doesn’t seem to have made any attempts to solve this is crazy.

Just set up a new ATV 4K connected to Denon AVR-X3500H which is then connected to LG C8 OLED. Audio sync issue noticeable right away. Only setting I changed related to video was to enable Match Content for both Dynamic Range and Frame Rate as anyone not willing to watch judder would do.

I can’t understand how nobody at Plex team has seen this issue as I’ve been able to reproduce it on every single Apple TV 4K I’ve gotten my hands on, with any movie I have.

Is credit due somewhere, or am I just used to it now? I haven’t noticed sync issues for the last few weeks. I’m not on any betas for Plex or tvOS.

Plex is the only app on the Apple TV 4K that I see with this problem. Not Prime Video, HBO Max, Paramount+ (which is a terrible app overall), Viki, Kanopy, Met Opera, Hulu, Netflix… none of them have this issue.

The audio issue is solved for me by turning on “use old player” (or whatever it’s called) but that causes other issues with video.

Same issue here with audio sync :frowning: old player fixes the problem but causes another bug with video artefacts when reference frames is not 4… How did the ATV Plex app go so wrong… :frowning:

I have a lot of videos that simply will not play with the old player, so I’m stuck with terrible sound issues, or switching the player back and forth when the one that works for audio fails to play video and the one that works for vide fails at audio.

And switching the player is so very convenient and easy to do.

Frustrating that after posting a few months ago and now coming back to this that nobody has a solution yet and the developers are silent.

I don’t remember what I tried at this point but one workaround for me for LG OLED TVs connected to external receivers is to use the LG tv plex app and setting up TV audio to output via optical to the receiver. For some reason this does a better job at keeping the audio and video synced and I have zero issues.

It does mean that you lose the visual user interface when checking receiver settings, and I’m sure there are some video quality losses (maybe not able to do vision/HDR) and audio is limited to 5.1 but at least I’m not going crazy. plus my video content is not always the “perfect” version.

Hope this helps friends. I am not willing to pay the exorbitant prices for some of the other Apple TV apps like infuse or MrMC

So, My issues have vanished for a while. I thought maybe it was a server update or a client update that had fixed it, but since people are still complaining about it, I guess not. I think it possibly is maybe a case of faffing about and getting the Apple TV and the TV settings in some sort of harmony.

I thought I would post my settings and see if it maybe helped others. For what it’s worth my audio goes via a Apple HomePod (Original big one not a mini)

Apple TV Settings:

Video & Audio >

Format: 4K HDR set to the exact refresh rate of the TV. In my case 4K HDR 60Hz

Chroma: 4:2:2
Match Content: Range On, Match Frame Rate: Off

Plex Apple TV Client:

I don’t think anything special here, everything set to maximum quality. But for ref, Allow Direct Play On, Display Type HDR and use Old Video Player Off.

Now for perhaps the most contraversal setting which was probably the biggest step in fixing the issue directly on the TV Settings, in this case a 2019 Samsung 55" LED.

Picture> Expert Settings
Apply Picture Settings: Current Source
Digital Clear View: Off
Auto Motion Plus (AKA Soap Opera Effect): AUTO

Yes, I turned soap opera effect back on (and I don’t get STUTTER!) And get this, with a Samsung TV, not sure about others, you must change these settings while the film/tv show is playing. E.g. If I go to the above settings now while content is playing, it will show as auto, if I go back to the settings while in the Apple TV main menu, the Auto Motion Plus is back off!!!

So it seems to be a case of change the TV settings while the content is playing, NOT while you are in menus!

Hope this helps others!

Yes, it’s known that the problem doesn’t reproduce when frame rate matching is disabled on Apple TV. This has been mentioned in this topic many times.

I updated to tvos 14.5 and it seems the sync issues of 4k audio has been fixed

Is that with all the ‘matching’ options on?

Yes with matching on

Apple added support for a number of additional framerates in tvOS 14.5. Now both 23.97 and 24, 29.97 and 30, 59.97 and 60 are (potentially) available.

No change here unfortunately. Audio still ahead by a constant 3 frames.

Just need this fixed now:

Might want to ping someone on the apple team. @sergiou87 doesn’t work for Plex anymore. I’m not sure who his equivalent is.

Issue is definitely not resolved by tvOS 14.5 upgrade. This is a Plex app issue.

@hsousa @Stevenson-Price @randhawk @chfredrickson Can someone from the Plex team please provide an update as to when this will be addressed? It has been an issue for more than a year.

Even though tvOS is now updated with the new frame rate options (which is the first step to fixing the issue) the Plex team will most likely need to push an update to the enhanced player to utilize the changes in tvOS 14.5

The Infuse team also had to release an update to support the new options.
