Apple TV 4K subtitle display on new player (MPV)

So I posted this before, but it never got any traction beyond a single developer saying he would look into it, and then it never got solved. See original thread here: Apple TV 4K Enhanced Player subtitles have a weird double-shadow

So basically, the new player on Apple TV 4K displays a really buggy double-white shadow behind subtitles, making them essentially unusable. The old player does not display this behavior. See examples in original thread, and feel free to ask for any additional info I can provide or that I have forgotten to mention.
