Unable to use the plex app on Apple TV to listen to music. It always closes. The only way is to use Plex Media Player on my Mac and Remote Buddy app. I have installed Remote Buddy on Mac and on Apple TV. On Apple TV with Remote Buddy I can connect to the Mac and use Plex Media Player on a dedicated Mac desk. It almost looks like an integrated app. But it was better when the Plex app worked
Also got this problem.
I am also having this problem. The Apple TV Plex app will play the first song off of an album then crash.
I have also started experiencing this more or less out of the blue (server upgrade? Apple TV app upgrade?) - Plex crashes randomly when playing music. Either as part of shuffle play, or just when playing certain tracks from an album. Pretty terrible that this problem seems to have been unresolved for so long? Looking for alternatives ā¦
+1 here ⦠really annoying
Been happening for quite awhile now. Funny enough, today it crashed after I opened my Plex app on my iPad when I was adding things to a playlist (it was playing for a long time on Apple TV no problem prior to using the iPad Plex app).
Iāll add my voice here as well. Iāve been having the same problem as everyone else for months. Using the AppleTV (4th gen) app to stream MP3 and FLAC from my WD MyCloud Pro PR2100. Some days it plays fine for a few songs then stutters and eventually locks up. Some days it starts crashing right out of the gate. But it never actually works the way itās supposed to. I think Iāll give up as well and look for an alternative. After reading this whole thread it doesnāt seem that this is a priority. Itās too bad, I like the interface and otherwise it seems great. But itās no good to me if it doesnāt work. Now Iām worried that Iāve got to start over creating playlists in some other app, unless thereās a way to migrate them to whatever I use next. Iāll have to look into that.
An update to my previous post. Looks like my Plex AppleTV app automatically updated itself to 7.5.1(21550) on Sept 1st, 2020. Since that update Iāve noticed NONE of the music playback issues I previously experienced, after streaming from my NAS for a few hours yesterday (several hours of uninterrupted playback has basically never happened). Soā¦perhaps the bug was finally squished with this latest update? Time will tell, and if I have issues again Iāll report back here. But in the meantime Iād like to take credit for this issue having been fixed the day after I posted a complaint. Obviously they were watching closely and when they learned I was upset they jumped right on it. So, everyone, youāre welcome.
Yeah, I had hopes too yesterday, when the app managed to play an entire 2-disc album without crashing⦠but I tested it again today by playing launching a playlist: the app crashed on the first song. I closed the app and then tried again, it crashed on the first song.
Apple TV 3 (tvOS 13.4.8) with Plex app V7.5.1
Plex server (V4.34.4) running on Synology DS214Play (DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 2)
Hello
for me last days was working well after ios 14 update but today it stops agains as before.
Still crashing every single day.
V7.7 of the Plex app for tvOS fixed a āhigh CPU usage while playing musicā.
Iāve been listening to music for the past two days with no issue⦠could that be it or is it sheer luck? (Iām afraid of getting my hopes up too soon)
Iām all up to date (Clients and PMS running on my Mac Mini) and randomly having this issue. Seems to have begun for me after TVOS14 upgrade on my ATV 4th gen. I
Happens for me during normal playback of any album. Astounding this has not been fixed in so long as it falls under basic functionality. I also now have to commonly quit and relaunch Plex app on ATV to get it to see my content again.
Attaching my logs.
I will note here that I may have found a bit of detail that could be helpful.
I consistently have this problem. Indeed, since the latest version of PMS and tvOS have come out, Iāve even had a new wrinkle, where instead of Plex closing out on my AppleTV, it freezes after finishing a track; the only ways to go anywhere or do anything at that point are to yank the power cord and thusly invoke HARD shutdown/reboot, or to pull out the regular appleTV remote (which I never use) and HOLD the Menu key for like a minute, which seems to force something on the tvOS end that nothing else will, and it drops out.
What I noticed recently came due to the season. I switched up for an evening, and pulled up my Christmas playlist. And it played ⦠and played ⦠and played. Three days straight, it played without error.
How could this be? Well, thereās one big difference between this playlist and my usual. My usual has 11k tracks in it. The Christmas playlist has 484.
So I am left to wonder if this is as simple as a limitation in how Plex on tvOS is handling the track list; is it, perhaps, foolishly loading the whole thing, rather than querying the PMS for a short list of the next 100 songs, and continually requesting only a small leaf more as it moves forward, and dumping out those that are āfar enoughā behind? I really donāt know. But it did make me wonder. And in the chance that my musings could prove useful, I share them.
I am experiencing freezing of the Plex App while playing music on my Apple TV(s). This happens randomly while playing a playlist or random playback of an artist⦠It is frustrating. This would really be bad if I was able to have a party. It usually happens when transitioning between tracks. I have two systems with two different Apple TVās. I prefer playing music using the Apple TV app. It even happens while mirroring my I-pad App to the Apple TV. I can also mirror my I-Phone 8 to the Apple TV. I donāt do this much. I donāt recall if the I-Phone Plex App has crashed. I store my 60000+ track music collection on a Synology 1515+ NAS in WAV format. I have two entertainment systems (Family room and Master Bedroom) with a 4K Apple TV and a 1st gen Apple TV, respectively. I mostly listen to music on my Bedroom system. The Family room is primarily for TV and Movies. I am currently listening to Christmas music on my Family room system and it just froze now. After reading through this thread, this issue a widespread condition, One common denominator it the Apple TV, I have a new unit and an old unit, Same issue. Even when I use the I-pad Plex App, same issue. You might think that it is an Apple compatibility issue, but I believe I saw similar issues with Firesticks and Rokus. I am a lifetime Plex pass holder. I have been very patient so far but am ready to evaluate my options. So far my Movie playback on Plex has been fairly reliable.
I have the same issue as well. Not only on the Apple TV but also on all my apple mobile devices and iPads. I believe it is tied to IOS14. No issues until that update. I also have an Amazon fire TV with Plex running on it. If works fine no issues period. I have not had a chance to tested it on an Android mobile device but that is going to be my next step. Plex needs to fix this issue on IOS. I thought the music locking up on ATV was due to .wav files but I have converted most of my music back to ALAC and the issue still persists. Help us PLEX!
I am still experiencing the music freeze on my two Apple TVās. It happens when I am using the Apple TV Plex app directly or when I mirror my I-Phone 8 or I-Pad Pro to the Apple TV and use their app. I have not experienced music freeze when using my I-phone Plex remotely. I do listen to Plex through my I-Phone during breaks at work and in my car all the time I seldom use my I-Pad remotely. I used to use it at the Library when they were open. All my music is stored in .WAV format on my Synology NAS file server. I have been researching options. I have been looking at the Amazon FireTV cube. I would start with one for my main Family Room entertainment system and then need a second for my Master Bedroom system. I donāt believe it will be possible to connect my I-Phone or I-Pad to the Fire-TVs. I have also considering using EMBY. I downloaded the SW on my PC. I was not able to connect it to my file server. I could not figure out the path. At first I tried WiFi, I then tried hardwiring my PC to my router. I still could not figure it out. I want to try the free EMBY before I buy a subscription. I am wondering if PLEX thinks this is an AppleTV problem, not a PLEX problem and are waiting for them to fix it. This is a strange dynamic and PLEX probably has the most to loose. Plex has my lifetime subscription money but could start seeing a lot of negative feedback on social media. That should motivate them to get this fixed. Especially since the consumer has other options.
Yesterday, I went and bought an Amazon Fire TV Cube. I set it up on my main entertainment system and installed the Plex App. I was able to listen to music for several hours with no crash. I will evaluate it for a few weeks before I buy another unit go my bedroom system. I am curious about Emby and will give it a try as well. I have spent many hours setting up my media on Plex. I hope Emby will be less work.
Yep, this one drives me nuts too. The Apple TV app is so broken itās becoming a joke. I can barely play 3 tracks at best if I use āLibrary Radioā playlist before it bombs out.
Unfortunately, I am experiencing this too. Going on 2 years since this thread pointed the out the issue and no fix. Not very encouraging.
