Apple TV App Won’t Stop Showing Subtitles

Server Version#: 1.27.1.5916
Player Version#: 8.4

Apple TV player won’t turn off subtitles. Tried turning them on them off. Tried restarting the app and the player. Subtitles turn off for the web player but I can’t turn them off for the Apple TV player.

What sort of subtitles are in the file? Do you know if the video is transcoding?

There are Closed Captions and MOV_TEXT subtitles in there. I’m not sure which are the ones showing up. The video isn’t transcoding. And it’s happening with multiple videos.

Is it possible to get a sample file that does this. I’ve tried with files with MOV_TEXT and Closed Cpations and cannot reproduce yet.

while we’re waiting, i’m curious does the ATV4K Settings for subtitles have any affect on Plex?

Settings > Video and Audio > Automatic Subtitles [On/Off]
Settings > Video and Audio > Audio Language [...]

@BigWheel, it seems all my files are doing this and only on the Apple TV player, not on the Plex Web player or on the iOS player. If it’s all files, is it more a file issue or a player thing? I can still try to generate a sample file, but maybe not until later tonight.

@nibbles I’ve tried both on and off for Automatic Subtitles with different files and it does the same thing.

I’m having this issue too.

It doesn’t happen on the iPad, phone, Web or the Apple TV 4th Gen. Only on Apple TV 4k

New information, for me this only seems to be happening on the Apple TV 4K

I am having a similar issue. Here is my setup:
tvOS version: 15.6 (stable) | iOS version 16.0 (beta)
Plex app version: 8.7 (stable) | iOS app version: 8.8 (beta)
Plex server version (Windows): 1.28.2.6151 (beta, I believe)

Whenever I play videos with VTT subtitle files, they start as being ‘off’, then when I turn them on I get two sets of subtitles, one on top of the other. When I then turn them off again, the rear (and larger) set of subtitles remains and keeps going as if they were still turned on, despite them being turned off. These are all documented in the attached screenshots from the tvOS version.

EDIT: This also happens on the iOS version, but doesn’t happen on the Android app on our Sony smart TV, or on the desktop app for Mac. I have not tested the desktop app for Windows.

Can someone please get me a sample file. also was curious if these are external or internal subtitles

@Justen_B @duffman1132 any chance of a sample? Not sure if you have notifications on.

Is that a recent Richard Osman House of Games pictured above? I can’t find it to test atm.

@BigWheel and @nibbles
Sorry it’s taken so long to get these to you, but I have a sample and subtitle file for you both. It’s a different episode of the series (I don’t remember which one I used for the screenshot as it was just whatever one I was up to at the time), but all of them do it.
Hope this helps,
-Adam.
