No subtitles in AppleTV

Today I set up my new AppleTV (3rd gen) to work with Plex Media Server / PlexConnect.
Everything works fine, except that it will not play subtitles.

If I play from the web interface on my Mac computer (http://192.168.1.30:32400/web/index.html#!/servers/726ffa72b483b3057312c417c6edd87f6279418f/sections/5/player/568) subtitles are shown just fine.
If I play from the Plex app on my iPad air, subtitles are shown just fine.
But on AppleTV, subtitles are not shown. I can select various subtitles from the menu, but they will not show on screen.

I'm thinking that this is a problem with PlexConnect.

My setup is s follows:

Mac mini, intel core i5 @ 2.33 GHz, 16 GB ram. OS X 10.9.1,
Plex Media Server, Version 0.9.8.18.290-11b7fdd
PlexConnect: Version: 0.3.1+
Python: 2.7.5 (default, Aug 25 2013, 00:04:04)
[GCC 4.2.1 Compatible Apple LLVM 5.0 (clang-500.0.68)]

Apple TV (3rd gen). Firmware: 6.0

The file I'm trying to play is an MKV with an external srt file (with the same name).

See this thread

Maybe post your issue there.

Exact same issue here - ATV2, though.

There doesn't appear to be help on this topic elsewhere in the forum.

PMS - 0.9.8.18 - running on WIn7 (64)

Python 2.7.5

PlexConnect - downloaded 27/09/2013

ATV 2nd Gen - firmware 5.3 (6105)

Neither External manually added or downloaded by agent work, though I can select them from them from the pre-play screen.

I'm new, but learn quick - any help is appreciated.

Roll back to a previous commit.

The latest one adds the start of a subtitle renderer but also removes a lot of functionality to do so.

Stay on this until the code (currently about 24 hours old) is more mature:

try change ur transcode settings.. wich type of file is it?

Oops maybe i should have read what date of PlexConnect :(

Hi stoffez - thanks for the reply.

I have about 600 movies.  Mostly mp4, but some AVI and MKV.  Subs are all .srt files when I download them manually.  I presume since freebase is set to download from opensubtitles.org that these are .srt as well, but I haven't found where they're kept to verify this.

I can play with my transcode settings if you suspect that's the issue.

if u have mp4 and external SRT´s u will need to transcode, then they will work like a charm :)

The need to transcode is changing but the new code is only starting to be implemented.

Yes but hes still using an old version of plexconnect

Thank you for the suggestion, stoffez.

Looking at the transcoder options available, what setting should I adjust?..  Okay, newb question: am I looking at the settings in PMS or the settings file of PlexConnect?

Thanks again!

The settings in Plexconnect… Transcoder setting should be :Transcode instead of Auto… Try it and se if it works

Thank you,

The options under transcode are a little cryptic, there is Auto, High Speed, High Quality, and Make my CPU hurt options... didn't think any of those meant that it 'wasn't' transcoding.

I've changed it to hurt my CPU, but won't know the effects until I get home.

Thanks for helping the newbie, stoffez.

Cheers.

Stoffez is talking about the PlexConnect setting - on your aTV->PlexConect->Settings->TranscoderAction.

But then, with the latest subtitle enhancements, it shouldn't be necessary to set it to force transcoding any more.

PlexConnect - downloaded 27/09/2013

now both u and f00bar missed it .. check the thread above

:D

Why would he do that???

if u read above u se thats the version hes using.. i did not tell him to use it.. he stated that he used it :D

Same problem, watching the thread to see if we can solve the problem!

Even using the aTV setting-> PlexConect-> Settings-> TranscoderAction. Subtitles do not appear!

The file I'm trying to play is an MKV with an external srt file (with the same name). Others with MKV embedded subtitle!

My usage is usually to watch anime!

So I tried it, and there's no difference.  Still no subs.

Cheers!

Please grab the latest of PlexConnect, play with its setting SubtitleRenderer (ie, set it to "iOS, PMS", "PMS") and report back - with information about media container, video codec, subtitle format.
