I bought a Fire TV a couple of months ago and returned it because the Plex app for it was so problematic. I thought “OK, most companies put a lot of work into their Apple apps because it’s such a tightly controlled platform”. So I bought a new 4K Apple TV and expected stellar stability. I am not getting that and I’d like to figure out what’s going on because the overall experience is so much worse than the Roku we used for years and years. Plex is rapidly losing the WAF (Wife Acceptance Factor).
Basically, the app will be fine for a few minutes, then the audio will drop from multi-channel stereo to mono. I thought at first it was a hardware issue with my sound system, but I’m convinced it’s software because the fix is to skip back one click on the remote and it re-starts the stream and the audio is back to normal. It does this about 6-12 times over the the course of an hour, so it’s extremely irritating and distracting.
Additionally, the video will freeze randomly, sometimes in conjunction with the audio crash.
I’ve tried various quality settings - these issues happen when the app is set to original quality, auto-quality, and 20mbps. The Apple TV is connected via gigabit Ethernet and has been rebooted several times. The Plex server in question is on a dedicated PC (Core i7, 16 GB RAM) connected via Ethernet.
Any ideas for how to troubleshoot? Does this sound more like a client or server problem?
