Apple TV HD (A1625) stutter

I have 2 Apple TV 4K as well as 2 Apple TV HD. I have no issues with Apple TV 4K (mainly Blu-ray and DVD that I own on my server, a few family movies), but I have been getting stutter on the Apple TV HD. From reading forums I see many people have issues with the 4k HDR and tone mapping.

All files stutter, including direct play of low bitrate files such as dvd rip. I’ve tried h264/265. I’ve tried both WiFi and Ethernet (as that Apple TV only has 100 I believe the wifi is actually faster).

The only resolution I’ve found is to use the “old player” on this Apple TV which eliminates the skipping (usually does transcode), but my HD Homerun videos and DVR recordings all skip. If I switch back to new player the HD home run videos and DVR recordings all play fine.

Is this a known issue on the older Apple TV HD?

I prefer the Plex interface and it gets wife approval, but on the same device on infuse no issues at all.

Thanks for posting as I was just about to post the same thing. I noticed this recently and have a similar setup as yours. I seems fine on the Apple TV 4K and this issue seems isolated to Apple TV HD.

I Will add to this that I recently went back to using Plex mainly for Plexamp. I had been using Jellyfin for about the past year with no issues on this device either. I do like the Plex interface, however, and would like to continue using it I did pay for Plex pass for the hardware transcoding,

I also tried several things last evening to include transcoding to see if this would make it skip less, and I could not find any settings that did not skip
