Player Version#: 7.18.1 (1752)
Please provide users the option of switching the media player/controls to use the native media controls developed and provided by Apple. The custom Plex controls will always lag behind what Apple provides and be less consistent, less nice, and less fun to use.
Currently for ex. the Plex custom media player has no jog shuttle feature for the new Apple TV remote. Even if Plex implements this at some point in a custom way, it will be less good, less reliable, less fun and less consistent than the native player.
Plex please. Do whatever weird custom stuff you want, but also provide users the option of using the native controls. This used to be an option some (many) months ago but was quietly removed and replaced with this custom stuff a bunch of us paying users don’t want.
Not exactly sure if you’re looking for Settings > Advanced > Use old player? The old player used to be based on the native player.
Keep in mind the native player will give your server much more to transcode as it’s significantly less capable to direct play media formats (which are supported by the current generation player).
As for the jog shuttle feature… there’s already two thread about that. From the looks of it, restarting the device got it to work for some of the users – so it doesn’t seem to be a complete non-feature…
@tom80H thanks, both the old and new players are custom, non-native controls. At some point in the past the old player WAS native, but that is not the case now.
I’m on the latest Apple TV 14.7 beta, and I’m aware I need to pause the video to get the native Apple shuttle control to appear. Works in Apple’s TV app, works in the latest (recently less-garbagey) HBO app. Does not work in the Plex player Apple TC app because Plex does not provide any native controls feature currently.
My experience has been that In both 14.7 and 15.0 tvOS betas, skip and jog wheel scrubbing work more or less as expected with the Plex 7.19 builds, using both the old player and new.
@ckdxxx Thanks, the beta is full so I’m not able to try 7.19. I’ll have to see how it works when it releases in the App Store but if the controls are not native I assume the jog might work as far as moving the playhead in the correct direction, but maybe there’s no jog icon like there is in Apple’s native controls.
But however good or bad an imitation Plex might have of the controls, I would still strongly prefer to have an option to use the actual real native Apple TV player, even if I lose out on some Plex feature that their imitation controls provide.
Nope, it’s not an imitation. Same look and feel as Apple’s controls because they are the same.
What most people fail to understand is that support for the new remote in tvOS itself doesn’t seem to be fully baked yet. I encounter glitches with it fairly regularly on Apple’s own apps.
Native or not, patience is key here. There are multiple factors at play here and they’re impacting a lot of developers, not just Plex. Frankly, this has been a really weird product launch.
Very true. Even my HBO Max app doesn’t have it yet. The jog wheel works fine in the newest beta. (That said, I actually just prefer using the touch pad; it’s more intuitive.)
