Jog shuttle function for Apple TV 4K 2nd gen remote

I was just testing out my new Apple TV 4K 2nd Gen remote, and noticed that Plex does not work with the new circular track pad when using it as a jog shuttle for scrubbing through videos.

In other apps (Hulu, Prime, etc.), if you hold your thumb on the track ‘ring’ for a half second or so, the icon on the timeline tuns into a circle, and you can scrub through the timeline in a continuous motion. Plex, however, scrubs forward on the right side of the ring, but when your thumb moves to the left side, it starts scrubbing backwards. Is this a new spec that requires an update to the app, or is there a setting somewhere to enable this?

This is one of the features I’m most excited about with the new remote, so I really hope Plex will support this key functionality.

It is not only the Jo Shuttle function that is missing. Since Plex decided to implement a custom player interface (that resembles the look and feel of the native interface with additional stuff), they have to adjust it for the new remote. What drives me mad is the wrong implementation of the skip 10-seconds (either forward or back) when I press left or right on the ring. Works without problem with the native player like in AppleTV+ but in Plex it’s a mess.

Not only is the new jog seek feature not working, but the skip forward 10 seconds or back 10 seconds click on the directional pad is not working. I’m sure Plex has had PLENTY of time to work this out and it’s a shame a product has launched and the Plex app is once again broken.

I am sort of pleased it is a general problem as I thought I was having trouble on my own.

How do we get this sorted?

@elan is this something that will be remedied soon?

I can confirm I’m having the issue as well.

I’ve raised internally. Have one in the mail myself so definitely keen on getting it sorted :grimacing:

Basically: “We have custom player controls and there’s no API for it yet. We either have to hope they release something soon or try to reimplement it.”

So sadly not a trivial thing.

If you can’t FF or rewind then Plex is basically unusable

You can still FF and rewind, don’t worry - you just have to swipe left and right like you would on the first gen 4K ATV remote. I’m sure it’ll get fixed soon.

In theory a work around is to switch back to the old player (is that even possible anymore?). I’ll give it a shot.

Edit: enabled the “use old video player” option. Confirmed the player was “avplayer” instead of “mpv”. Still doesn’t work. Odd. Seems like it should. Any idea why that would be?

Hopefully they don’t remove the old player option. Usually within 48 hours of any Plex update that switches me to the new player I end up finding a video the new player chokes on, doesn’t play, and I need to switch back. Anyway, on topic, been waiting 5 years for this new remote, now that it’s here and doesn’t work right in Plex, everyday is like an eternity.

The Channels DVR team did it in a day, with their own player which works perfectly. Maybe you should ask for help.

yup… same issue…

using first gen apple tv 4k and purchased remote only. good thing I still have the old one. new one is useless with plex.

Can confirm that jog wheel and skip functionality in Plex works as expected in tvOS 14.7 beta 2 (it did not work correctly in beta 1).

Good to know! It’s still a dev beta and not a public beta right?

Oops! I spoke too soon… jog wheel does NOT appear to be working correctly. Skip does.

I’m able to use the jog mode if the video is paused. But if it isn’t, now I get a skip forward or back 10 seconds by just touching the wheel and releasing (unless I slide into the center pad. Yeah, it’s weird.)

Also, when paused, I can skip back/forward in 10 second jumps by just tapping, not clicking, the jog wheel.

As it turns out, it’s beginning to look like one of my remotes is defective, which explains the inconsistent results I’m seeing. So that’s great

But yes, on my other Apple TV, jog wheel scrubbing and 10 second skip both work correctly and consistently in Plex.
