Apple TV stuttering with high bitrate UHD content

My high-bitrate, UHD HDR movies with DTS audio and PGS subtitles play back pretty badly on my Apple TV 4K.

The movie plays nice for 15-20 minutes, then playback becomes choppy, audio goes out of sync and there are lots of loss frames.

If I pause, and hit play again - It’d play nice for a few minutes (1-2), then do this again until it reaches a point in which playback is no longer possible. As a PC builder, this looks to me like thermal throttling. However I can’t further narrow this down.

The content is stored in my NAS DS218+ and hard wired to the router, and so is my Apple TV. With smaller files, everything works flawlessly.

I’ve tried enabling “old player”, but this causes my movie to be transcoded, which results in even worse playback. Match content framerate on tvOS doesn’t help either.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

For anyone wanting to help, this is EXACTLY what’s happening to me:
