Apple TV: tvOS 14.5 to support both 24.000fps and 23.976fps

I thought this was interesting.

Very interesting indeed! This could potentially solve a lot of issues with Plex on Apple TV 4K (stuttering, audio sync issues etc).

Have you tried the beta? If so does this work well?

I don’t have an Apple TV. I’ve got a shield tv. I’ll probably move over to apple once they update the Apple TV hardware.

Oh ok yeah that makes sense. I’m ready to see when the new apple TV hardware will be released as well.

I went ahead and downloaded the beta for TV OS 14.5 and it does indeed have smoother playback, and some files I had issues with before (audio sync etc) are now playing perfectly.

Apple adding support for fractional and integer frame rates (24.000fps and 23.976fps) have solved most issues I had with audio sync and frame rates.

I’d say an improvement in overall video/audio quality judging by playing 1 full movie.

Thanks for the heads up with that article man I was unaware they were adding such an awesome feature for video/audio!

If infuse needs to change their app to accommodate the new framerates, I imagine Plex has to to.

Yeah probably so. But judging by the few MKV files I had trouble with before trying the 14.5 beta (Sherlock Season 1 Blu-ray MKV for example) I think whatever apple did with the frame rates and sync have fixed (at least for me) the issues I was having.

Been playing movies/TV Shows all evening and the experience is much better. Even the lag I had when using Airpod Pros and other bluetooth headphones are gone now.

So I think the benefits will be there just by Apple updating the TV OS as the frame rate matching isn’t handled within Plex anyway. But I could be wrong. As long as Plex on Apple TV 4K works like this or better, I may consider moving away from my HTPC setup. But time will tell!

Or try a shield tv. I don’t care about profile 7 Dolby vision that Blu-rays use, so a Apple TV would be fine for me. I’d miss audio pass through though.

So, all issues went away for you?

Yeah so far everything I had trouble with is playing great now. Although I have not upgraded my entire blu-ray collection to 4K UHD. So I can’t speak to the performance on that end. Standard Blu-ray is still my preferred source for movies/tv shows.

And I thought about the Shield TV pro but ended up going with the ATV for a few reasons.

  1. Plan to get a pair of Stereo Homepods to replace bulky home theatre (I hear the Dolby Atmos is great when using these).
  2. The audio converts to FLAC which is still lossless and sounds great (better than MacOS).
  3. NOW Apple adding support for fractional and integer frame rates (24.000fps and 23.976fps) makes the ATV4K a more capable Home Theatre alternative.

Plus I prefer the UI of apple products compared to android. Just a personal preference since all my computers, tablets and phones are running iOS or MacOS.

Shield has it’s share of issues and there are things with the exoplayer that plex uses on android that don’t work: Live TV and recorded TV audio can go out of sync. VOBSUB issue that’s not been fixed since 2017 and slow-motion playback on certain recorded TV content. Also no All4 app on android here in the UK.

I just want a simpler life and the MPV player that plex uses for iOS and tvOS is excellent. Like you, we have all Apple devices and it just seems simpler to get an Apple TV whenever they bring out Apple TV 6th gen.
