AppleTV audio out of sync

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4523
Player Version#: 7.17 (1424)

Audio goes out of sync by a few hundred ms, after a couple of minutes watching anything. Restarting the client app sorts it temporarily, but it keeps happening. I’ve tried using the “old video player” in the settings. Makes no difference. The audio also makes an odd popping sound.

I’ve resorted to linking Infuse 7 to my Plex account and watching that way instead on my AppleTV. No audio sync issues with the same files. Also no audio sync issues using the Plex app on an iPad. So it’s definitely a Plex AppleTV app issue.

All of the video files are “.mkv” converted to “.mp4” with:
“ffmpeg -i input.mkv -codec copy output.mp4”

Do you have match content framerate enabled? in AppleTV settings? The audio-drift bug is what forced me to abandon using AppleTV for Plex (and thus, my AppleTV).

Note, I am not suggesting that you should have to disable framerate matching. Only saying that this is a long-time Plex/ATV bug and I hope maybe it gets fixed with the new hardware on Monday (but I doubt it).

I’ve enabled and disabled frame rate matching. The audio slowly goes out of sync either way.

It’s not an AppleTV issue because I can watch the same video files using the VLC AppleTV app and the audio never goes out of sync.

This is so frustrating because I’ve paid for a lifetime Plex pass, but it’s now useless :pensive:

I would suggest using Infuse Pro 7. It plays everything in sync and has better codec support than the Plex client on Apple TV. They also pay for the proper licenses so DTS, Atmos and all the other fancy codecs direct play no problem. I almost tossed my Apple TV 4K because the Plex client has extreme audio sync issues, Infuse 7 is the way to go IMO for any Apple TV users.

I’ve already paid £95 for Plex. It used to work fine, it only seems to be in the last 2-3 months that audio keeps going out of sync. If AppleTV apps like VLC and Infuse can play videos without sync issues, then shouldn’t Plex be able to fix their app?

Yep totally agree with you. However Plex has not addressed the issue and instead of waiting on them, I’m using Infuse. It’s $9.99 for a year (Infuse 7 pro and you can use the 30 day trial first) so that was the best option for me. Infuse also has better audio quality and Direct Plays a wider variety of content for what it’s worth, so even when Plex does fix it I may still use Infuse as it officially supports more audio/video codecs and has better playback.

Sucks Plex devs won’t even address the issue though. I’m with you there!

I have the same issue. I wonder if iOS 14.6 is not here to be blamed. Plex app on Apple TV worked great since the last iOS update. What’s interesting it does work well on iPad and iPhone with new system, Maybe Plex will do some update to it’s app and fix it. I am Plex lifetime member too … it’s a shame to go to waste, because I like it a lot!..

I can confirm this is also happening to me. Noticed straight away after tvOS 14.6.
I’ve been messing around trying to figure things out on my audio system thinking this is the problem but it’s not. All other apps perform flawlessly, bbc iPlayer, infuse when connected to Plex. I hope Plex gets this sorted soon with a fix.

Weirdly I’m on the tvOS15 beta and the audio sync issues are not present for me at the moment with the current Plex update. I remember on tvOS14.5 the audio sync disappeared and around 14.6-14.7 it came back.

So I’m not sure if it’s Plex or the Apple TV OS that causes it every few updates.

I just downloaded Infuse 7 and I have to say that it is way better than the Plex app. It looks better, it plays better. Im very impressed. It solved my problems instantly in terms of the audio out of sync I was experiencing with the Plex app on Apple TV

Yes I don’t have any audio sync issues with Infuse or VLC on my AppleTV. But I started this topic because I’d like Plex to fix their app’s audio issues :weary:

I’m in the same boat. Apple TV 4k, playing non-4k content (I don’t have any), and the audio/video sync issue is pretty bad now. Very frustrating. Plex has been rock solid for so long.

I’ve turned to Infuse to watch the videos with the issue now, but the Infuse UI isn’t always as good as the Plex UI, like being able to watch trailers. I hope it’s addressed in the near future, but I haven’t yet found anything about it being worked on.

So not sure if I did something else on the TV too, but I was messing around with the Apple TV settings and turned on both content matching options (dynamic range and frame rate) for 1080p content using the new player and somehow it fixed itself. Turning off dynamic range matching breaks the audio again. No idea why when it’s not 4K content.

I had the same issue with Apple TV. When I use the Plex app with the Apple TV the audio will start out OK and then slowly become out of sync. I can restart the app again everything works properly but little by little it goes out of sync. I can play the same video on the TiVo Plex app with no issues also when I play the video straight to my Mac computer no audio issues.
