Apple TV UI slow and sluggish, lags

Yeah, none of these suggested setting changes have made the UI any smoother for me. It’s bad on movies, but do any of you use this as a LiveTV/DVR solution? Practically unusable. Next to impossible to successfully land on the show you want to watch in the guide.

And when can we get a fix for the guide not landing on “Right Now” for a time when I launch the app? Why does it always show tomorrow?

Apart from the UI issues, I’ve been looking at this thread to revert back to the old video player and will update after a few days on performance.

https://forums.plex.tv/t/stuttering-on-x265-files-since-plex-tvos-update/757344

really bummed out that even non-challenging files now pretty much always have at least one bit where the image freezes or stutters. this isn’t a network issue, it’s the app struggling to cope with playing a video file. i don’t have the new apple tv 4k, but it’s honestly mad that this is a bug that’s been introduced and doesn’t seem to be being worked on. even a couple months ago stuff played fine.

Old player is working for me, so in settings of Plex enabling the old player fixed all my stuttering issues.

I’ve had some lag issues in the interface in general, but all of them were due to the appleTV itself, not Plex specifically. I pinpointed this on a specific sleep/wake sequence :

If I shutdown everything by holding the power button on the new Siri Remote while the TV/AVR is switched to the ATV HDMI input and then wake up in any order (TV first or AppleTV first), then everything will lag until I restart the AppleTV. Killing the app manually and relaunching it doesn’t fix the issue, in fact, even modifying the volume with the Siri Remote is slow in that scenario.

If I switch to the TV/DVB input and then shutdown the TV and let it shutdown the AppleTV through HDMI CEC, then it’ll be fine.

Exactly same issue.
I used to have plex on an old Rasplex version before and never had any problem. Also no issue with the iOS app. Only with the apple TV.

*update
the fixed detailed here:

Apple TV UI slow and sluggish, lags - #49 by Tion1

worked for some time but with the latest update and the introduction of ‘themes’ the ultra-low framerate feature has been reactivated (this time with both artwork colors disabled).

I did notice that it happened immediately after entered then exited a TV show. Again this is all anecdotal but it’s unfortunate to experience this horrible bug again. Let’s keep this thread active till it’s acknowledged as an official bug and fixed.

So the Old Player has an unforeseen issue, it does not play x265 encoded video. You get a nice spinning wheel and audio only, so switched disable the old player again and back to choppy playback on Apply TV.

Time to plug out my $199 Apple TV and plug in my $29 Roku!

Anyone got an update on this issue, Plex are you guys working on a fix?

I’m not sure when it updated, but I’m now on 7.26(1744) and it seems to be much snappier, easier to accurately make selections. Anyone else seeing this?

I’m on latest version and I get hitches after awhile. There is some kind of poor memory management or memory leak going on. Large libraries probably contribute.

It’s a shame as I associate Apple with silky performance over and above the rest. But not with Plex.

I think there’s more than one issue being discussed in this thread (as already pointed out by some users)… apparently there’s been the occasional fixes which seem to have addressed poor performance in certain situations with Plex — and there’s Apple TVs and their remote getting sluggish over time (to the point of freezing for good). There’s a dedicated support page from Apple on how to troubleshoot those issues. Rebooting the device or reconnecting the remote will bring some relief for a time.

I’m having this 2nd issue myself.
Using the remote app/widget from the iOS control center works fine, using my TVs remote via HDMI CEC used to work fine (since updating to tvOS 15 it’s no longer working at all)… just working with the Siri Remote is completely broken for me — not just in Plex but as a general issue.

During a recent call with their support, they suggested I might want to buy a new model (maybe starting with a new remote as that’s cheaper).
As a sidenote… they also told me they’re aware of HDMI CEC issues since tvOS 15 but „engineering“ supposedly told support that fixing this is up to the TV manufacturers (which won’t happen since Sony no longer updates my TV)

So… you sure you’re still experiencing Plex specific issues or are you seeing that on the entire platform.

I have a plex issue. Only plex has hitches.

The remote matter is different and I’m aware of it having had it in the past.

Yes the remote issue is different and I have also experienced it.

The issue seems to be even worse with H265 HDR content - 24p will drop down to what looks like about 10-12fps. Even turning off ‘direct play’ in the settings does not help with this.

It’s still a lagfest when you use ‘artwork colors’. Dunno what magic Apple TV you’re using that doesn’t have insanity Lag but if you could post the model number and a your logs I’d be happy to have a look at them and never report back

just kidding but seriously can we get an update on this… Many users submit logs (I submitted those and even included a video) and get absolutely zero response from anyone. It almost feels like ‘yeah send through the logs’ is a good way to shut people up and ignore the problems…

I thought I was the only one. I have ATV4K and ATV and Plex has been very laggy. Sometimes pages don’t load as quick as before. When I select a movie, it takes Plex 3-5 seconds to show the Circle progress icon to indicate the movie is gonna load.

I also want to add that Infuse 7 is more responsive than Plex for ATV

For anyone struggling to get plex working well on Apple TV recently, a good workaround is to use Infuse. I’ve been running this for a couple of weeks now and it’s solved all the issues with Plex.

I’ve been a paid supporter of plex since it first came out and for years, it’s been a “it just works” solution but the past year or so, appletv playback seems to have all sorts of issues in that it fails to play more often than it works.

The UI on the apple TV has been screwed up since an update back in August. Either the show posters will take forever to load, shows and movies themselves will take forever to start after clicking play, or I will get errors like the media can’t be found. No issues on my Roku devices.

Same issues here on a ATV 4K and a ATV (right before 4k model, just a tad worse on this one).

Very slow / delayed UI , and this seems to have started several months ago.

Lots of complaints from friends who use my plex sever as well (but if im seeing the issues locally, it must be worse for them).

Also , very frustrating (but still usable), is content will flip between Clicking the remote’s touchpad to go + - 10sec seek, and Tapping to go + - 10sec seek. (its never consistent).

Ive been a plex pass sub for many years, now, and love plex, but i do sometimes wonder what is plex putting its energy/focus towards now-a-days ? if its not their server / client software, then what is it? :frowning:

Still an appalling experience on Apple TV, the app needs to be quit almost daily now especially after playing a few old school avi files. I’ve since bought a cheap HD Roku and it performs perfectly all the time.

Please can you please fix your buggy Apple TV app and at least admit it’s a problem that’s been ongoing for over 5 months now…

Version 7.28 of the Apple TV app seems to have fixed the issue for me:

FIXED:

  • Background color change pauses when scrolling quickly between items.

Navigating the interface is now so much smoother. Thanks for the fix!
