Apple TV's Missing Library Reload Button

You can scan any library from its entry in the navigation menu.

No, I cannot. I read that suggestion and I do not have an option to reload or refresh. The options are “Unpin from Sidebar”, “Reorder”, and “Scan Library Files”. The last option did NOT update the available shows in the TV library when selected, despite them being visible in that same library on multiple other devices.

Just to be clear, I did not mention “refresh” or “reload”. I wrote scan.

I’m surprised scan didn’t work for you, it worked fine for me just now…

I’m surprised the button was removed, and here we are. Can you suggest something that can help resolve the issue? Can you pass along the feedback of the users in this thread to the developers?

I’ve clicked the Scan option many times with no change, same as other users here. Just as another user posted, I had to close the app and re-open it to see any change. If the Scan option should update it, you have a bug to address because it doesn’t work.

The scan button just tells the server to scan the library to find new files. It doesn’t update the display unfortunately.

That being said, that spot would be a decent location for a reload/refresh button.

I’d like to +1 the request to re-add the refresh button, or better still have the interface auto refresh when new shows are added. It’s frustrating not being able to easily check if new shows have been added.

I have the same problem. When I add new shows to my library they show up in the proper library categories on every device except my Apple TV.'s. I’ve hit the Scan option too many times to count and it still it doesn’t update the library to show the new shows (they only show up in the Home section) The only way it will actually refresh within the TV library and display the new shows is to completely close the Plex app and re-open it.

So why not select/play items from there (vs “completely close the Plex app and re-open it.”)?

Because if you’ve added a bunch of different media at once it’s a lot easier to find what you’re looking for in the appropriate library categories; that’s what they’re there for. It sure beats scrolling through the home section. I setup Plex on ATV for my senior mother and she leaves it open on one section all the time which was never a problem because content would refresh; now it doesn’t.

Having either an auto refresh every or easily accessible manual refresh is key. I am really missing the refresh button.

SCAN is only available for the OWNER UserID. Managed Users do not have that option. It would be nice if they would add that for Managed Users (or all users) since that is the only option. I personally like the old RELOAD that all of my users had access to. I think even shared users had that.

Why are you a moderator on a support forum if you don’t feel like actually helping anyone with the issues they report? Seriously, can you do something other than give answers that do nothing to solve the issue? Can you provide the feedback to the developers or perhaps a moderator that actually wants to help the people on this forum?

It seems for the most part people here just want a minimal acknowledgement that their feedback is being received. You haven’t even done that. What’s the point of these forums if all they end up doing is upsetting paying customers? I’m about to cancel my Plex Pass and put this thread and your lack of support as the exact reason.

I’m not a Plex employee so I can’t “acknowledge” anything on the behalf of Plex.

OK, thanks for ignoring the rest of the post.

Okay, let me start over

Apparently the goal is to have this work without a reload button (the only Plex client to have/need one apparently).

I will try to track down specific flows where this is not working. Seems like the Library screen is the biggest issue?

That is correct. The old version, when you viewed a specific library such as “TV Shows” there was a refresh button at the top. My setup was to filter to show only unplayed shows. When you finish watching a show, the Library page still shows the recently played show amongst the unplayed shows. If you hit the now missing refresh button, the page would reload and the played show would be gone (as it should) and any new shows that were added since the last refresh would appear as unplayed (since that is the filter that was set).

With that button gone, when a show finishes playing and the app returns to the library page, it still shows the played show amongst the unplayed shows, but now there is no easy way to refresh the page to clear it out and show new items.

Ideally, we would not need a refresh button and the page would simply update when we navigate to it, as it does on other OSes. Since that never seemed to be the case with the tvOS app, the Refresh button was essential. Since it is gone, we now have no option other than to change our entire workflow, which may be easy for us as the ones who configured the system (though annoying) but not easy for our non-tech friendly family members that rely on the process they already know.

As a short term work around, does clearing the filtering and then re-selecting Unplayed update the Library screen?

Yes, resetting the filters does seem to induce a refresh on the Library as cmschaecher alluded to in a previous post:

Though this is a workaround, it is still not ideal compared to the Refresh button we used to have (when counting how many clicks are needed to accomplish the goal).

Agreed it’s not ideal; as stated, the goal is to get refresh to work without manual intervention on the player.

Thanks for this, frankis. Your last few paragraphs succinctly lay out the issue.
